Subject: [KYJP] Graves County Order Books - Update & FYI Items
Date: Sat, 17 Mar 2001 21:20:30 -0600
My friends -
I am dropping by today to pass along a couple of items of news.
First, I am still working on revitalizing the equipment I use to convert
these miscellaneous files, so there will not be a file offering this
weekend. Your patience is appreciated, as I intend to try to upgrade this
entire process in order to try to make use of more modern equipment on the
"front-end" of that process. I will keep you posted.
I received word yesterday that the microfilming of the first two Graves
County Order Books has been completed and the KY Archives is well into the
third volume. If this rate of filming is sustained, they should have all
volumes completed by the end of this next week. After that, there will be a
period of quality review to insure that the images are the best that can be
had. If there are variations, retakes will be made of the pages in
question. I am hopeful that we can begin our indexing project by the end of
April. I will continue to keep you abreast of developments.
On the data input for the upcoming JP Surnames web site, I was able to add
another 200 e-mail addresses to the surname database today. The work is
moving along, albeit much slower than I had hoped. Most of the lists of
surnames which I received have at least five surnames shown, and some have
had as many as 20(and one had 44). These all have to be input individually,
so the pace is slow. But progress is being made.
On a personal note, I was notified today that I have been commissioned a
Kentucky Colonel by the Governor of the Commonwealth. My great friend - and
the friend of all of us who work with KY history and genealogy - Sandi
Gorin, had nominated me for the honor and she guided the process through
the steps necessary to make it happen. I really did not think I would
qualify, but apparently I did pass muster. I will try to be worthy of the
commission.
The subscribers of this List were very generous last year in their
nomination of me to receive the 2000 Award for Outstanding Contributions to
Genealogy for the Western Region of KY, as presented by the Kentucky
Genealogical Society, and I went to Frankfort and accepted that Award on
your behalf. At the proper time, I intend to nominate Sandi Gorin to
receive that recognition for the Central Region of KY for 2001. She should
have received the Award long ago. When that time arrives, I will supply the
e-mail/snail mail addresses to which support for that nomination can be
sent. I know that many of you are also subscribers to Sandi's
South-Central-Kentucky List, and you know what a valuable resource she is
for all of us interested in the history and genealogy of that region of KY,
and I hope you will join me in supporting her nomination for that award.
She gives of herself constantly, and, aside from being an astute and
dedicated researcher, she is a fine and caring human being, and I learn
from her on a continuing basis, and will nominate her with great pride. Her
various genealogical endeavors reach throughout the Commonwealth of KY.
I believe that brings us up to date on the latest news of the day. It is
snowing heavily here now, and it appears it will do so all night. So, its
off to bed and a good book.
