Dear Fellow Jackson Purchaserities:
I am hoping that there is one among you who can tell me if there is a
way to find out the answer to a question of mine. The question itself is
hard to formulate, so let me first provide some background information.
My great-grandfather William Grubbs (1822-1855) on 13 Apr 1846
purchased from John Copeland and his wife land on the West Fork of the Clark
River, Calloway County, Kentucky, the NW quarter of Section 11, Township 3,
Range 3, plus an adjoining 3-acre parcel of land in the SW quarter of
Section 2, Townnship 3, Range 3 East William died in the spring of 1855 and
later that year his widow Anne Utley (middle name) Wade Grubbs and her
children moved to the New Hope Settlement (now Crandall, Kaufman County),
Texas, where her parents Vincent Anderson Wade and Phoebe Utley Wade had
migrated in 1845.
My grandfather, Vincent Woodbury Grubbs writes of riding a horse back
to the old homestead shortly after the end of the Civil War and arriving
there in 1865, in order to settle some of the accounts. He speaks of
bringing money home but did not say that the land was sold at that time.
When I was in Caloway County last spring, I found a deed in the
Calloway County Deed Book T, pp. 18-21, originating in Kaufman County,
Texas, from M. H. Bonner, judge of the 10th judicial district, and processed
by Henryi Erwin, clerk. A second portion of this deed indicates that it was
received in the Calloway County Courthouse on December 3, 1875. The deed
was drawn up by my grandfather's mother and relatives to grant him the
authority to sell or otherwise dispose of the property in any way he wanted
to. By that time, grandfather was a practicing lawyer in Kaufman, Kaufman
County, Texas. I am pretty sure that he did not make a trip to Kentucky byi
horseback at that time as he habusiness obligations in Texas. And I have
rarely found information of my grandfather to be wrong, so I believe the
horseback trip was, indeed, in 1865.
What I would like to find out is if there is any way to find out
when, in what manner, and to whom the property was sold. This property is
directly north of land that was owned by William's father, John Thomas
Grubbs. And I have been there, or as close to these farms as possible given
the available roads today.
I have not yet seen the Kaufman County equivalent of this deed
furnishing power of attorney to my grandfather, so I don't know if there is
any reference to the resolution of the matter or to another document, but
would be able to search the Kaufman Countyi records further, although it was
not there that I found the deed but rather in Calloway County, Kentucky.
Anything any of you can do to help me will very much be appreciatied.
Sincerely yours,
John W. Grubbs
