I do know the family I'm researching does have a centuries-old history
of intermarrying, even among first cousins. If curiosity is piqued, it is
not my direct line.

I am new to the list and haven't had time to introduce myself yet. I just
had to reply to this post though. I would be interested in the answers you
received concerning the terminology. I think old records and terminology are
very interesting. It always helps to know what you are reading too. So, if
you don't mind sharing the replies to your question, I would appreciate it.
IMHO - As for intermarriage in family lines, I have found that to be pretty
common if not very common in times past. It seemed to be a custom in some
circles. If you really think about it, there would be little way of avoiding
it to some degree at least for our early ancestors. Most of our ancestors
migrated in family groups, when they settled in a new area, they settled in
the same family grouping. They traveled very little since their time was
committed to developing their homestead not to mention that travel was
difficult and the time required to make a trip was considerably more lengthy
than we know it. I have to wonder how many were fortunate enough to have
animals which could be spared from the farm long enough to make a journey.
With all this in mind, our ancestors probably stayed pretty close to home
most of the time so their acquaintances were few and probably mostly
relatives......who else was there for them to marry? I don't think there
would have been many visitors to their area for the same reasons listed
above. If there were any at all, surely not enough to go around for every
eligible man or woman. This is only my speculation but to my feeble mind, it
makes sense.
