My friends -
My original thought was to bring another in the JP Vignettes series today.
However, we have a holiday tomorrow, and as we gather together on this
Thanksgiving Eve, we know that our celebration tomorrow will be somewhat
muted by the realization that there are several thousand families this year
who will have empty chairs at their table as a result of the tragedy of 11
September. I know that we will all remember these families in our
Thanksgiving prayers, for theirs will not be a joyous occasion.
Thanksgiving can be a time for reflecting on the good things of the
previous year, and in keeping with that, this message tonight will bring
the text of one of the snippets from the Murray Ledger of so many years ago
as mentioned in yesterday's posting. It speaks not of man's inhumanity to
man, but of those simple every day acts of charity for which the people of
this nation have always been known:
Murray Ledger
1 August 1907
"A noble deed was done last week to Wallace Riley of Golo by the members of
the WOW Lodge of that place. The family of Mr. Riley are ill and have been
for several weeks and he was unable to look after his growing crops. They
needed attention and something had to be done at once. His brother Woodmen
realized that fact and ten of them took the task to help a member in
distress and, as a result, about three acres of tobacco was cleaned and
given the work needed while the hay crop was also attended to and he is now
feeling under deep obligations to the Lodge for the work they did in time
of distress. Mr. Riley now feels that a friend in need is a friend indeed."
We saw this same spirit throughout the nation after the 11 September
attacks. And I am sure we are all thankful that the knowledge of the truth
in the old adage that "A Friend in Need in a Friend Indeed", is still
strong - still fierce - in the nation today.
May I extend my best wishes to everyone for a pleasant Thanksgiving
holiday. I will hope to have a file offering at some point through the
weekend.
