Subject: [KYJP] Graves County Order Book G - Images for Pages 251-275 Now Ready for Distribution
Date: Sat, 19 Jan 2002 18:29:53 -0600
My friends -
Before moving to the above noted subject, a bit of administratavia - we had
a bit of genealogical "spam" appear on this List yesterday concerning a
family reunion in Canada for a particular surname - one that was not ever
present in the JP region. This particular message has appeared on many
dozens of mail lists, and the sender has been duly notified by a number of
list hosts that these messages are off-topic and such messages should go to
the Reunions-L list or the specific surname list which handles the name in
question. I have removed the individual from this mail list and the
individual will not be allowed to return, although I suspect that this was
a one-shot occurrence. The only reunion posts that are on-topic for the JP
List are those which represent families who resided in the Jackson Purchase
region. We have a subscribership of 750 on the JP List, and, as a result,
it becomes imperative that List guidelines be closely followed.
Back to business - I have now digitized pages 251 through 275 in Graves
County Order Book G, and they are ready for distribution. For our new
subscribers who may not be familiar with the term "Order Book", I will
point out that such books contain the minutes/orders issued by the circuit
court of a county. Sometimes, such order books also contain orders issued
by other county courts which must have interaction from the circuit court.
We are very fortunate in that Graves County Order Book G has many orders
contained within it from the Graves Equity Court. As tenured members of the
JP and Graves lists know, anytime that we can get any type of information
from an Equity Court, we approach it with great interest, since the Equity
Court was the place where matters of "just treatment" - equity - were
worked out. As a result, family arguments which developed into lawsuits
were very often handled by the Equity Court and there can be all sorts of
family information contained in these suits. About a year ago, while
working in Hickman County, I came across a case in their Equity Court in
which a man had three wives - one in Hickman County, one in Ballard County
and one in Massac Co., IL. The case file(which still existed)had 162 pages
of depositions and evidence, including love letters written by this man to
each of his three wives. The women had accidentally learned about each
other's existence and had pooled their resources to bring this fellow to
justice. These depositions named all of the family members, going back to
the man's grandfather, all of his siblings, the children by each wife(a
total of 16), how he met each one and wooed them - it was an incredible
collection. That sort of discovery, of course, is the exception, rather
than the rule, especially since we do not have the case files for the
Equity Courts in most of the JP counties. But any time that we see that
word "Equity" in an order book, it should be a madly waving red flag,
telling us to stop, look and read.
Just as a reminder, here are the guidelines on obtaining image files of
this latest segment:
1) No more than five (5) pages requested per segment(a "segment" is the
block of 25 pages which I digitize at one time)
2) Please place the phrase "GCOBG Image Request" in your Subject header,
with the page(s) which you need in the message body area
3) Please do *not* send this entire message back to me with the request
4) Please do *not* request images of any page number higher than 275 -
those have *not* yet been digitized.
5) There may be up to a 72 hour period between the time you send the
request and the time you receive my response. This depends on how many
requests are received for pages in this segment. If you have not heard back
from me within 72 hours, please query me.
6) Be aware that these are JPG image files and that the downloading time
could be several minutes unless you have a fast Internet connection.
7) The Preliminary Every Name Index to Order Book G can be found here:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~kygraves/MIGCORDBG.htm
8) Please do not ask for just a surname - I must have the page number(s)
shown for the individual you need.
9) Non-subscriber/PML requests will not be honored due to time
constraints.
