Date: Tue, 20 Aug 2002 19:47:06 -0500

My friends -

Due to the very large number of requests I have received from yesterday's
Marshall County data post, I am going to send along a Jackson Purchase
Vignette today, in order to allow myself some little bit of extra time to
respond to pending requests. We'll get back to data tomorrow.

This subject of this Vignette is David M. Galloway of Graves Co.

"David M. Galloway, a pioneer of this county, was born July 10, 1819, in
North Carolina. His parents were John and Lucy (Thompson) Galloway, natives

1859, aged seventy-five. He and his wife were members of Seceder Church.
The mother died in 1826, aged thirty-eight years. David M., on commencing
for himself, had $300. He farmed until 1857, when he began serving as
Deputy Sheriff, and was elected jailer and served until 1861. He was
appointed Sheriff in 1865, and the same Fall was elected to that office.
During the War, he went to Texas and bought 250 head of horses, and sold
them to good advantage. He next went into the sawmill business, and later
went security for $10,000, and through that risk, was broken up. He then
moved to Dukedom and went into the dry good business with H.F.Summerville,
in which he continued for 6 years. Later he purchased the same business in
Wingo. In 1877, he went to Florida and invested in eighteen and one-half
acres of land, which he purchased at $20 an acre. He spent four winters t
here, and after putting his land into an orange grove, sold the same at
near $500 per acre. He now owns eight acres of land with a home-like
residence in Wingo, besides a tract of sixty acres, one mile from town. He
is one among the oldest residents in the County. He was married August 29,
1839 to Miss Martha Walker, of Stewart Co., Tenn. These parents have had
four children, viz: Adaline (deceased at two years of age), Evaline F., the
wife of G.W.Fowler; Molly S., the wife of H.S.Summerville, who died in
July, 1877. Elizabeth died in September 1875. Mr and Mrs. Galloway are both
