Subject: [KYJP] Graves County - Vital Statistics Records - 1852-1859 - Births - Part 44

My friends -

Having returned from a visit to the JP region on Saturday, I am again
resuming data posts.

Our first post for this week comes from our continuing review of the
1852-1859 Vital Statistics birth records for Graves County. I probably
should mention, as I do from time to time, that these early VS records are
woefully incomplete and inaccurate. Only about 40%-45% of the actual
births, marriages and deaths which occurred ever found their way into the
records. As a result, if you know that an individual was born in Graves
County, for example, in 1857, but no VS record appears for that birth, that
should not be taken as conclusive that the birth did not occur or that it
occurred elsewhere. I once checked on 12 of my own familys' births,
marriages and deaths which occurred in the 1852-1859 time frame in the JP
region. Only 4 of them appeared in the VS records. In "burned" counties,
however, such as Graves, the VS records may be the only official records
which we have available, which causes us to rely on them quite heavily for
the birth, marriage and death events, if a family member does appear in
those records.

Subscribers to the JP and Graves lists can obtain the full dataset for a
birth shown in the listing below by sending a request to me. These datasets
usually contain the date of birth, the gender of the child if not obvious,
and the name of the father and maiden name of the mother.

As always, your continuing assistance in not resending this entire message
back to me with the request is appreciated.

On another matter, I am glad to be able to report that the Graves County
Order Book G CD-ROM is complete and there will be an announcement
concerning it on Friday(our "book day").

Tomorrow, we will move up to McCracken County.
