MAYFIELD, KY., Jan. 23, 1863.
My attention has been called to a scurrilous publication in your issue of the 14th instant over the signature of "Fair-Play," censuring the Grand Jury impaneled at the late term of the Graves Circuit Court, and especially myself as foreman of that body. Gentlemen never pen offensive personal communications anonymously. It is mean and ungenerous to stab a reputation in the dark. To answer the charges of anonymous scribblers unbends the dignity of an upright man. My object is, therefore, simply to ask this insidious calumniator to unmask himself, that the community may know him, and if it shall appear that he is worthy of notice in the estimation of his neighbors, I will vindicate (as I can triumphantly) myself and those with whom I acted from his foul imputations. If he shall still withhold his name, and refuse to acknowledge the paternity of his literary offspring, I can only leave him to the scorn and contempt of an honest community as a slanderer who uses publicly and vile!
ly the names of others while ignominiously concealing his own to avoid exposure and personal responsibility.
JOHN EAKER.
