Dear Friends:
I am not a member of the Pace family nor a blood relative, but I have
many Pace entries in my very large Reunion data base, in which many of the
interconnected families of the Jackson Purchase area are represented. A few
days ago, for some reason I cannot remember :+), I decided to see if I could
bring some order to my entries for the Pace family and I ran into a problem.
The article on "Leonas 'Tater' Smith" in the "History of Marshall
County, Kentucky" (1984, repreint 1993), p. 377, indicates that his great
grandfather was Daniel [Dandridge] Pace (b. 1792, Virginia). That poses a
problem from the data I gleaned from various census records. First of all,
his parents were James Hansel Smith and Sula Pace. In the 1880 Marshall
County Census, Sula ("Babe") Pace ( ca. 1872/1873-1951) is listed as the
daughter of Thomas Pace and Mahala Hurt. Elvira Lewis, in her 1880 census
edition indicates that Thomas was the son of Joel and Sally Pace, and I show
that Joel was the son of Spencer Pace, father of Daniel Dandridge Pace. So,
at most, it would appear that Daneil Dandridge Pace was the 2G uncle of
Leonas "Tater" Smith.
I am sure there must be somre first rate Pace genealogists out there
and hope that one of you can clear up this probelm for me.
Cheers,
John W. Grubbs
