Dear List:
I have recently received a picture of what is supposedly my great-aunt, MARY
OLLIE SNOW PERRY's grave (a mound of dirt with some sparse flower
arrangements on top) in Graves County - there is also one of those small
metal gravestone markers. The picture must have been made in the summer
after MARY OLLIE died because there are leaves on the tree. An extract from
the Mayfield Monitor dated Wednesday, March 6, 1895, page 2, states under
the column heading of OAK HILL, "Mrs. Ollie Perry died on the 26th ult.
(February 26, 1895), at her home in Wingo. She leaves a husband, four
little children, a father, mother, two brothers and a host of friends to
mourn her death". I also have a funeral card which verifies the March 26,
1895 date.
My questions are:
Where was/is OAK HILL? In the background of the picture of the gravestone,
there is one very large monument and a few smaller ones with a lot of trees
around. In the picture, there are also horses and buggies which would
certainly be appropriate for the time.
If there is anyone on the List who is familiar with the older cemeteries
around Wingo, I would love to share this picture with them to see if they
recognize anything. MARY OLLIE'S uncle was buried in Wingo Cemetery 10
years later (1905) so can't help but wonder if she might be buried in Wingo
Cemetery. Does anyone know if there are a lot of unmarked graves in Wingo
Cemetery?
Thanks for any and all help.
Janis
