Quoting from a book called Kentucky place names by Robert and rhetoric Copyright
1984 by the University Press of Kentucky

Visalia in Kenton County; This village with extinct Post Office between Kentucky
177 and the Licking River 5 mi. east of Independence was settled sometime before
1807 by Nathaniel Vise Jr. In 1818 he was authorized by the then Campbell County
Court to establish the town, later called Visalia for him. For a brief period in
1827 it was the Campbell county seat. The first post office to serve that area
was established on June 2, 1885 as new Canton probably across the Licking. In
1859 George Watson moved it a short distance upstream to Visalia and it was
renamed.
