GEORGETTA SIMPSON CARNES, 73, of Flat Lick, passed away Saturday, April 27,
2002 in the Baptist Regional Medical Center in Corbin. She was a daughter of
the late Floyd and Omie Carnes Simpson, born to them on Sept. 28, 1928 in
Bell County. Mrs. Carnes was homemaker, and a member of the East Jellico
Baptist Church at Tinsley. On Nov. 11, 1947, she united in marriage to the
Rev. Lee Roy Carnes, and to this union a son and four daughters were born.
Surviving Mrs. Carnes are her children: Merrell T. Carnes and wife Sheila of
Crossville, Tenn., Sharon Kay Valentine and husband Ed and Debra Gail Haggard
and husband Mike, both of Corbin, Brenda Lou Kessler and husband Rick of
Jacksonville Fla. and Melissa Rochelle Bailey and husband Bill of Pineville;
her 13 grandchildren; her three great grandchildren; her brothers, Ted
Simpson of Walker and Joe Simpson and wife Mable of Trotwood, Ohio; her
sisters, Gladys Carnes and Luediene Hines both of new Lebanon, Ohio.
Funeral services for Georgetta Simpson Carnes were conducted at the East
Jellico Baptist Church at Tinsley on Tuesday, April 30, 2002 with the Rev.
Rondald Howard and the Rev. Tommy Patrick officiating. Burial was in the
Green Hills Memorial Gardens in Middlesboro.
Hopper Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

CHARLES WINSTON MARTIN, 45, of London, passed away Friday, April 19, 2002 in
London. He was the son of Mary (Baker) Martin and the late Daw Martin, born
to them on March 29, 1957 in Pineville. Mr. Martin believed in the
Pentecostal faith and was an employee of Clayton Mobile Homes in London.
He is survived by his mother, Mary B. Martin, of Barbourville; one son,
Andrew Winston Martin of Corbin; three sisters, Cordie Martin of
Barbourville, Anna Williams and husband Harold of Morrow, Ohio and Katherine
Smith and husband Hersel of Woollum; three brothers, Henry Martin and wife
Catherine of Independence, Donald Martin and wife Kay of Girdler and Harold
Martin and wife Melinda of Dayton, Ohio.
Funeral Services for Mr. Martin were conducted in Hampton Funeral home Chapel
on Wednesday, April 24, 2002 with the Rev. Larry Cart and Brian Miracle
officiating. Mr. Martin was laid to rest in the Mud Lick Cemetery at Flat
Lick.
Hampton Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

EDWARD "Ed" MARSEE, 81, of Ingram, passed away on Saturday, April 27, 2002 at
the Pineville Community Hospital. He was born in Warren, Ky. on May 20, 1920,
a son of the late Thomas Henry and Lucy Partin Marsee. He was a believer in
the Baptist faith and had been a welder for BRC Coal Company and Davis
Construction.
He is survived by his children, Kent (Jeannie) Marsee, Eddie (Maybell) Marsee
and Joy Annette Marsee, all of Ingram; ten grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren.
Services were Monday at the Arnett & Steele Funeral Home with the Rev. Arnold
Petrey and the Rev. Hurla Phillips officiating. Burial was in the Fox
Cemetery at Ingram.

JAMES GREEN, age 92, of Murray, and formerly of Barbourville, died Friday,
April 19, 2002 in the Jenny Stuart Medical Center in Hopkinsville. He was the
son of the late Louis Tom and Mary Elizabeth Greene, born to them on March
11, 1910 at Pineville Kentucky. Mr. Greene was a retired carpenter, a member
of the first Baptist church of Murray, and a United States Army veteran,
serving his country during World War II.
On November 8,1941, he united in marriage to Mary Pickard, and to this union
a son, Jimmy Lee Greene was born. Along with his parents, he was preceded in
death by his wife: Mary Pickard Greene on October 31,1997, and his son: Jimmy
Lee Green in 1990. Surviving Mr. Greene is his loving granddaughter, Kimberly
and friend, David Wagoner; and his loving great granddaughter: Amanda Nicole
Greene, both of Murray; his brother: Reid Greene and wife, Lola, of Havanah,
Fla.; and his two sisters: Dorothy Vansant of St. Louis, Mo.; and Marie Jones
and husband, the Rev. Eldon Jones, of Cheyene, Wyo.
Funeral services for James L. Greene were conducted in the Hopper Funeral
Home Chapel on Wednesday, April 24,2002 at 1:00 p.m. with the Rev. Devil
Taylor, Jr. and his-brother in-law the Rev. Elton Jones officiating. Burial
was in the Mayhem Cemetery at Sharps Gap, Barbourville. Those serving as
pallbearers were, family-and friends of the Greene family.

BELLE FRAIZER WALTERS, 100, of the Route 6 Paint Hill community, passed away
Wednesday, April 24,2002 in the Corbin nursing home. She was a daughter of
the late Jim and Cordie Marshall Frazier, born to them on Oct. 30,1901 in
Knox county. Mrs. Walters was a member of the Paint Hill Baptist Church. On
March 16,1929, she united in marriage to Robert Walters.
Surviving Mrs. Walters are her nephews and nieces: Jesse Walters and wife
Lucille and Chester Walters, both of Corbin; and Joe Walters of Woodbine;
Mascal Helton of Paint Hill; Ga. Ulreich of Hamilton, Ohio and June Smith of
Barbourville.
Funeral services for Belle Frazier Walters were conducted in the Hopper
Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, April 26, 2002 with the Rev. Denvil Taylor,
Jr. and the Rev. Jimmy Elliott officiating. Burial was in the Helton Cemetery
at Paint Hill.
Hopper Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

ALLIE MARIE LICKLITERMAYS, 84, of Las Cruces, N.M. and formerly of Swan
Pond, died Friday, April 26,2002 in Las Cruces. She was a daughter of the
late Robert and Victoria Philpot Lickliter, born to them on July 29,1917 at
Swan Pond.
Surviving Mrs. Mays is her son, Kenneth E. Mays and wife Donna of Las Cruces,
N.M.; her three grandchildren and her five great grandchildren; her brother,
Joseph Lickliter of Silver City, Nev.; her sister, Evelyn Mchugh of Avon,
Ohio; her half brothers, Bland Lickliter and Michael Lickliter, both of
Union; half sisters, Elizabeth Sowders of Barbourville and Betty Hale of
Chatsworth, Ga.
Funeral services for Allie Marie Lickliter Mays will be conducted in the
Hopper Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, May 3, 2002 11 a.m. with the Rev. Devil
Taylor officiating. Burial will be in the Hampton-Lickliter Cemetery at Swan
Pond. The Mays family will receive friends at the Hopper Funeral Home on
Friday from 10 a.m. until the hour of the service at 11 a.m.

BARBARA LEE PERKINS SPURLOCK, 71, of Avery Township, Mich., and formerly of
Barbourville, passed away Tuesday, April 23, 2002 in Michigan. She was the
daughter of the late Sarah B. And Edgar Perkins, born to them on Feb. 4,1931
in Barbourville.
Surviving Mrs. Spurlock her husband, Charles Spurlock of Atlanta, Mich.; her
children, Charles and wife Vicki, John Spurlock and James Spurlock all of
Atlanta, Mich., Carolyn Decker and husband Arnold of Paducah, Jackie Reams
and husband Richard of Corbin and Barbara Hubbard and husband, David of
Grayling, Mich.; many grandchildren and many great grandchildren; her
sisters, Bonnie Bingham and Bille McCarthy of Smokey Route six and Betty
Gibson of London.
Funeral services for Barbara Lee Perkins Spurlock were conducted in the Green
Funeral Home Chapel in Atlanta, Mich. on Saturday, April 27,2002 with Pastor
Ken Johnson and Pastor Michael Shelton officiating.

LOLA MILLS BAKER, 77, of mills, died Saturday, April 27, 2002 in the
Barbourville Nursing Home. She was a daughter of the late Nasby Benjamin and
Elizabeth Jackson Mills, born to them on Dec. 28,1924 at mills. Mrs. Baker
was a retired employee of the Gross Pointe, Michigan board of education and a
member of the Salem Baptist church. On February 19, 1946, she united in
marriage to Oliver Baker, and to this union three daughters were born.
Mrs. Baker is survived by her daughters, Rather Palmer and husband Kenneth of
Oliver Springs, Tenn. and Bonnie Stevens of Mills; her three grandchildren.
Funeral services for Lola Mills Baker will be conducted in the Hopper Funeral
Home Chapel on Thursday, May 2, 2002 with the Rev. Earl Hammons officiating.
Burial will be in the Mills Cemetery at Mills.
The Baker family will receive friends at the Hopper Funeral Home from 6 until
9 p.m. on Wednesday and after 11 a.m. Thursday until the funeral hour.

SHIRLEY LEE MESSER PACK, 60, of Piqua, Ohio and formerly of Dewitt in Knox
county, passed away Friday, April 26,2002 in Troy, Ohio. She was the wife of
the late William Leonard Pack.
Surviving Mrs. Pack are her children; Sharon Plunkett, Jr. And husband, Jerry
of Fletcher; Virgie Brown of Piqua; Lisa Allen and husband, Michael of
Fletcher; Lynn Gump and husband, Keith of Sidney; Cecil Pack and wife Pam and
William Pack, both of Piqua; twelve grandchildren; her brothers: Vernon
Messer of Kentucky; Walter Messer and Ronnie Messer, both of Piqua; and John
Messer of Cincinnati.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, April 29,2002 at the Melcher-Sowders
Funeral Home in Piqua, Ohio with the Rev. Dewie Schell and Pastor Phillip
Brent Howard. Burial was in the Fletcher Cemetery in Piqua.

REBA SUE LOWERY, 55, of Barbourville, passed away Wednesday morning, April
24, 2002 at her home. She was a daughter of Ora Shelton Goodin and the late
Cephuas Goodin, born on Feb. 1, 1947 in Knox County. Ms. Lowery was a
homemaker and a member of the Living Waters Pentecostal Church. She united in
marriage with Tip Jackson in 1962 and to this union two children were born.
In 1977, she united in marriage with William Lowery and to this union one
child was born.
Survivors include her mother, Ora Shelton Goodin of Gird1er; three children,
Phyllis Jackson Long and husband, David, of Berea, Elizabeth Jenell Jackson
Grimes of Richmond and William Cephuas Lowery and wife, Mindy, of Artemus;
three sisters, Buellia Marie Brewer and husband, Sam, of London, Oma Lou
Lawson and husband, Dearl, of Girdler and Clara Jean Brewer of Girdler, two
brothers, James Ben Goodin and wife, Debra, of Berea and Cephuas Goodin Jr.
and wife, Janie, of Georgetown; seven grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home
Saturday, April 27 with the Rev. Bobby Epperson, the Rev. Owen Smith and the
Rev. Tommy Frazier officiating. Ms. Lowery was laid to rest in the Shelton
Family Cemetery at Girdler.

DORCAS MILLS, 84, of Scalf, the widow of Johnnie Mills passed away Wednesday,
April 24, 2002 in the Knox County Hospital. She was the daughter of James M.
Mills and Julia Hubbard Mills, born to them on July 8 1917 in Knox County.
Mrs. Mills was a member of the Salt Gum Baptist Church and a homemaker. On
March 9, 1933, she united in marriage with Johnnie Mills and to this union
eleven children were born.
She is survived by one daughter, Judy Mills of Scalf; six sons, Raymond Mills
and wife Betty of Dewitt, Ennis J Mills of Flat Lick, Omis Mills of Scalf,
Wendell Keith Mills and wife Escelene of Scalf; 27 grandchildren and 36 great
grandchildren; three sisters, Dora Mills of Barbourville, Chelsia Engle of
Corbin, Daisy Simpson of Dayton, Ohio; one brother, James Eugene Mills and
wife Helen of Pineville; one daughter-in-law, Virginia Mills of Irvine; one
son-in-law, Clement Mills.
Funeral services for Mrs. Mills were conducted on Sunday April 28. 2002 at
the Salt Gum Baptist Church at Scalf with the Rev. Earl Hammons and Brother
Jim Matt Bingham officiating. Mrs. Mills was laid to rest in the Johnnie
Mills Cemetery at Jeffs Creek.

JACK D. CARR, 70, of Tampa, Fla., died Sunday, April 7, 2002 at Saint Mary's
Hospice in Knoxville, Tenn. He was born on Oct. 8,1931 in Covington. He was a
member of the Church of Christ. He served in the United States armed forces
as a medical technician. He retired after 31 years of service from the
Hillsborough county school system.
He is survived by: a son, David Carr of Memphis, Tenn.; daughter and
son-in-law: Karen and Steven Schooley of Orlando, Fla.; two grandsons;
brothers, Dorcel Carr and wife, Chris and J.B. Carr and wife Olive.
At his request, Jack's remains were cremated on Monday, April 8, 2002.
Memorial services for Jack D. Carr were conducted in the Hopper Funeral Home
Chapel on Saturday, April 27, 2002 with the Rev. Glenn W. Campbell
officiating. Burial was in the Stewart Cemetery at Artemus. For those who
wish, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in
loving memory of Jack D. Carr.

GROVER 'Jack' HURST, 70, of Cannon, the son of the late William and Brillar
Hammons Hurst, was born in Knox County, Kentucky on July 19, 1931 and passed
away at his home on Friday, April 26, 2002. Jack believed in the Baptist
faith. He was retired from Chrysler Motor Company and a Veteran of the U.S.
Army. In 1987, he was untied in marriage to Shelby Marion and to this union
three children were born. Later on November 30, 2001 he was united in
marriage to Joyce Pearl Messer.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Pearl Hurst, Cannon; one daughter, Shelia
Marentett, Roseville, Mich.; one son, Gerald Thomas Hurst, Barbourville; five
sisters, Evelyn Disney, Cannon. Mrs. Hazel Callebs, Cannon, Mrs. Beatrice
Kon, Livonia, Mich., Mrs. Gladys Glinkie, Pompano Beach, Fla. and Nannie
Trent, Cannon; two brothers, Mr. Patton Hurst and wife Donna, Barbourville
and Mr. Ben Hurst and wife Mary, Butler; two stepsons, Anthony Bowser and
wife Lee Lily and Mike Bowser and wife Sherry, Acworth, Ga.; five
grandchildren; two great grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted in the chapel of the Hampton Funeral Home on
Monday, April 29, 2002 with the Rev. Ricky Broughton officiating. Interment
was in the Jones-Hurst Cemetery at Cannon.

LORETTA LYNN FREDRICK, 56, of Barbourville, was born on July 19, 1945 and
passed away Sunda,y April 28, 2002 in the Knox County Hospital. She was the
daughter of Clark and Delar (Bargo) Mills. In 1963 she was united in marriage
with Albert Fredrick and to this union three children were born.
He is survived by one daughter, Patricia Lowe; two sons, Billy Fredrick and
wife Vangie and Shawn Fredrick, all of Barbourville; one brother, Leon Mills
and wife Lettie of Scalf; eight grandchildren.
Funeral services for Ms. Loretta Fredrick will be conducted in Hampton
Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday, May 2, 2002 with the Rev. Earl Hammons and
the Rev. Dean Liford officiating. Interment will be General Bargo Cemetery at
Scalf.
