Miss Martha Cox Pitman (nee Litton) was born Dec. 24, 1828, and was married to
William McNeil Sept. 18, 1842. To this union was born two, William P. and
Elizabeth McNeil. She was married the second time to John Pitman, Dec. 1,
1864; and to this union was born one sone George N. Pitman. Sister Pitman
died Sept. 3, 1897, aged 74 years, 9 months, and 21 days. She was a member of
the Methodist Church for at least 60 years, and was all of this time a good
Christian woman, a kind, good neighbor, a loving wife, and indulgent mother.
On Saturday, September 4, the writer preached her funeral to a large and
appreciative audience of the best people of Pittsburg and surrounding country.
I will say to the aged husband and the children and friends that we offer our
heartfelt sympathy, and pray that the Father will not leave them comfortless,
but will send the Spirit of peace.

OAKLEY

A light frost fell here last week, and consequently everybody is busy saving
the products of the their summers labor. The corn crop has been damaged to a
serious extent by the continued drouth. Though fodder is dry, nearly every
field of corn is green, plenty of roasting ears yet.

H.O. Mullins, who has been in Virginia several months, has returned with the
report that work is booming, but wages extremely low.

JACKSON COUNTY

Died, Wednesday morning Sept. 15., Miss Mauda Bowling, near here. She died
very suddenly being ill only a few hours before her death.

A difficulty arose between John Coger Lunsford and Cecil Shepherd and his son
R.B. Shepherd, at an association at Oak Grove last Thursday which resulted in
Lunsford being stabbed in the chest with a knife. The wound was a very
dangerous one. Drs. Goodman and Azbill dressed the wound and sewed it up.
His intestines were cut out and the doctors say he is not liable to recover.
Shepherds were arrested and filled a bond of $500 each for the examining trial
at McKee next Friday. There were many eye witnesses to the affair, some of
whom will swear that the old man stabbed Lunsford and while others will swear
that it was his son. The difficulty arose over a horse trade.

Married-A few days ago (date forgotten) W.H. Peters, of Nathanton to Miss
Martha Halcomb of Maulden.

BENGE, LAUREL CO.

Thomas McDaniel a very old and respected citizen of Sextons Creek this county
died yesterday the 26.

Considerable Typhoid fever in this section but reports are that they are doing
fairly well at this time.

LOCAL ITEMS

There was a collision of two freight trains at East Bernstadt last Saturday.
Both engines and several were wrecked. No one was seriously hurt.

Mr. J.E. Hamlin and daughter, of Missouri, who have been visiting relatives in
this and Whitley counties for several weeks, left on their return home Sunday.

George Ward was given an examining trial yesterday before Judge Brown and held
in a bond of $1,000 for robbing Robert Sigenthaler, at the colony, Sunday
night.

WHO WAS HE?-About one month ago an intelligent young man about twenty- eight
years of age, seeming to have plenty of money and to be very liberal with it,
appeared in the Western portion of this county, and since then has been
boarding at the residence of Jonathan Speak. About one week ago he was
stricken with plurisy, and after lingering a few days, died Monday night. He
gave his name as James Early, but upon examining a few papers in his valise
after his death, it was discovered that his name was J.E. Halcomb, and that he
had a sister in Missouri. During his lifetime he was heard to speak several
times of friends in Lexington. Apparently he had no occupation, but was seen
at different times to have large rolls of money, but after his death they have
not been able to find any part of this money. His name, occupation and
conduct is a mystery to all. Any information as to his friends and former
life will be gratefully received by Mr. Ed. Jones, London, Ky.
