FYI:

According to Collins' History of Kentucky (vol. 1: 188) the MAGNOLIA, a
U.S. Mail Packet steamboat that ran from Maysville to Cincinnati, exploded
in flames and sank nine miles upriver from Cincinnati on March 18, 1868,
killing about 35 people. Many "drowned in the river, or burned to death on
the wreck, which caught fire, was blown up again by powder, and sunk two
miles below." Collins lists McIlvain among the victims, in addition to
Captain James Prather, Rev. F. W. Stone, and Miss Retta French. The boat
was valued at $30,000, not including freight.
