Here are the clues: In the 1870 Mason County, Kentucky census, my
ggg-grandmother, Emily MURPHY, is listed as a Mulatto whose birthplace
was Virginia. Given this Census data, can one conclude a). one of her
parents was white?; and /or b). that her parent or her birthplace was
Virginia?

If I assume that she was held as a slave either in Virginia or Kentucky,
what are the genealogical techniques that I would use to research who
her former owners were?
