I need suggestions on where to look next to solve a
discrepancy in a death date.

My (3) great grandfather's tombstone (I have been to the
cemetery and taken photos of it)clearly states he died
October 9, 1898.

I have been doing some other research on him and
everything I find states his death date is October 9,
1891. The "everything" that I have found includes an
index to the cemetery stating 1891 with a footnote that
it COULD BE 1898 and a couple of articles I have found
in County History books from my library. These books do
not cite their source for the date of 1891.

The tombstone looks 'new' to me, but I don't know a lot
about them. I thought that maybe someone had put a
replacement up with incorrect information.

Would you take the date of the tombstone as "engraved in
stone" or is there something else I could look at that
would solve the mystery once and for all?

Any suggestions would be appreciated!
