I would try to locate the current owner of the property and gently ask
them if they know where the headstones are now. Tell them, if nothing
else, you would really like the stones back.
Somebody in rural southern MN decided to "clean up" a small cemetery.
They went to a lot of work to pick up all the stones that had fallen
over. It turned out that they stacked them behind a utility shed on the
grounds! I was just glad that they were still there somewhere.
