Message Board Post:

William,
I have no specific information concerning my Stubblefield family before 1819 Alabama.

I am the GGreat-granddaughter of (Absolom Stubblefield : see listed as the last child of NANCY ANN CLORENCE STUBBLEFIELD & UNKNOWN STUBBLEFIELD.

We have a family ancestor
"Unknown" Stubblefield
(said to have been born in Tenn)
married: c. 1819 NANCY ANN CLORENCE
born 23 May 1800 in SC
They had Eight children:
> Polly Stubblefield 1819 AL m: Chappell
> William R. Stubblefield 1822 AL
> Martha Ann Stubblefield 1823 AL m: Williams
> James Stubblefield 1825 AL
> John S.Stubblefield 1827 AL m: Bell
> Molinda Stubblefield 1830 AL
> Robert Coleman Stubblefield 1834 AL
> Absolom Stubblefield 1841 TENN.
(Which is different from all the others and much later)
We would like to find their father's name!

(*)Martha Ann Stubblefield (above)
m: WILLIAM MADISON WILLIAMS
Listed in the Pope Co. AR 1850 Census:
William M. Williams age 40, farmer TN
Martha A 25 AL
> > Rebecca 8 AR
> > Leroy 6 AR
> > Elizabeth 4 AR
> > William R 2 AR
> > Coleman 1 AR
Note: The children: William R. and Coleman were drowned Crossing a river, on way west to California in about 1852-3. They had more children in CA., see census below. I am interested in finding the grave of William Madison Williams (died after 1862 & before 1868) in Shasta Co., or Napa Co., CA. But there is a chance it was located under the Shasta Lake.

1860 census in Sonoma-Napa counties CA lists our
Stubblefield/Williams/Chappell families.

The handwriting on this page is too frilly and makes it hard to distinguish some letters.

Also, in the 1850 census Gibson County TN.(below), we find Nancy(Clorence) Stubblefield with her two youngest (Robert Coleman Stubblefield & Abraham "Absalom" Stubblefield) with two older sons (William & John) living near, with their young growing families.

I have BETHENIA (BELL) STUBBLEFIELD b: C. 1824 NC., m: JOHN S. STUBBLEFIELD b: 1827 AL., in the 1850 Gibson Co., TN census with their children, but just recently, I noticed that there was another household listed next door to them with a BELL family (which I think could be BETHENIA BELL'S mother and siblings because they were born in NC also).

Here is what I found:
LYDIA BELL ,55, F, W, NC
ELDRIDGE P. BELL 25, M, W, NC
ELEANOR BELL, 21, F, W, TN
ANDREW BELL, 18, M, E, TN.

That information would indicate that this family moved from NC to TN about 1829 (by the birth-dates in TN).

I still need to look in TX 1870 census to see if the Bell family moved to TX with the Stubblefields.

* * *
One thing that I notice is that Nancy Clorence Stubblefield is
listed as the head of household in the 1830 & 1840 census Jackson County, AL (1840 census time, she would have been pregnant with her last child, ABSOLOM, who was born in TN in early 1841) Other researchers have suggested that Nancy's husband was killed or died or deserted his family by 1829, desertion would be an excellent reason for the whole family to agree to never mention his name ever.

One of my questions is:
Our family "story" has the last child Absolom (1841) as being born in Rutherford County, TN, but I notice that there is a Rutherford "Town" in Gibson County, TN., which is only four miles from where they were residing in the 1850 census, Lynn Point P.O., so I am leaning toward the prospect that the last child (Absolom) was born in Rutherford, Gibson County, TN.

Nancy Stubblefield w/ family movement toward the west:
>From 1840 census in Alabama to TN 1841, (Nathaniel Stubblefield -no relation, that I know of, yet-could have been related, but I have researched Nathanial's parents and siblings)- lived near Nancy Stubblefield, see 1830 & 1840 census Jackson Co., AL. In 1840-41 Nathaniel moved his wife and children up through TN, stopping off in Murray, Calloway CO., KY (situated on the E.Fork of the CLARKS RIVER) then on to ILL, and PERHAPS Nancy traveled with them, northwest to Gibson County TN) staying there untill the 1850 census, and then in 1860 census we find her and the majority of her children with their families in CA.

I have descendant information on the family lines in CA.

Also note that Nancy's two older sons (John & William) have children born in Alabama, three/five years before the 1850 Gibson County, TN census. Which would makes me think they moved from AL. to Gibson County, TN. about 1848-9, to join their mother and siblings.

We find Nancy's two older sons (William & John) still in Gibson County, TN in the 1860 census, so they did not make the trek to CA with the rest of the Stubblefield family:

Right after this census in 1860 in Gibson Co TN. we find that JOHN S.STUBBLEFIELD family had moved to Texas, where they had more children :
BETHENIA / BETTIE STUBBLEFIELD b:1865 d: 22 July 1939
STEPHEN H STUBBLEFIELD b: 11 July 1866 d: 14 Aug 1948
THOMAS E. STUBBLEFIELD b: 25 Mar 1870 in Hopkins Co., Sulpher Bluff,TX
I need a PO of the 1870 census TX.

Here is John S. Stubblefield's brother William w/ his family in the same 1860 Gibson Co., TN census:
9 2128 2151 Stubblefield W.R. 30 M 150 TN
10 2128 2151 Stubblefield Mary 27 F TN
11 2128 2151 Stubblefield Margrett 14 F TN

15 2128 2151 Stubblefield Eliza 4 F TN
16 2128 2151 Stubblefield Thomas 1 M TN
This indicates Mary as a second wife who brought her daughter Margaret with her to this marriage. The first wife Jane and Elizabeth the oldest daughter is missing in this census. Is Jane or Mary the mother of Saml., Eliza & Thomas?
I need to find William STUBBLEFIELD & family in 1870 census.

John S. Stubblefield's son: William Andrew Stubblefield b:15 may 1850 TN m: 25 June 1874 in Hopkins Co., TX to Mary
(Nancy?) Elizabeth Burkheart b: c.1850
(who are her parents? I see some mention on the Burkhart Board)

WA Stubblefield & Mary Elizabeth Burkheart children:
Beth (Hester) Stubblefield (1875) Hopkins Co., TX
A. Stubblefield (1876) "
C. Stubblefield (1878) "
Thomas Henry Stubblefield (1887) "
M. Stubblefield (1893) Delta Co., TX
W. Stubblefield (1895) "
I have seen other information that said there were ten children ,but
only seven survived, and listed these children also:
Allie Stubblefield 1880
Carrie Stubblefield 1889
Myrtle Stubblefield 1891

John S. Stubblefield's daughter: Bethenia Stubblefield b: c.1865 TX m: 24 Aug 1882 in Franklin Co., TX to Nash Willoughby Pate b: 15 Aug 1860 Holmes Co., MS D: 25 Aug 1937 TX (his parents: Noah Pate b: c.1842 m: 28 Jul 1859 Richmond Co., NC to Mary Jane Covington b: c.1843?........both Noah Pate and Mary Covington were from Richmond County, NC)
P.S.
Mary Jane Covington Pate married James Craton Carroll (son of John Wesley Carroll and Hulda Hearne) on 8/10/1865, so it would seem that Nash Willoughby Pate was the only child by Jane's 1st husband , and Nash's father Noah W. Pate was probably killed in the Civil War serving CSA duty in Mississippi after the 1860 census and before the above marriage for M.J. Covington Pate. I have information on the children from Mary Jane Covington Pate-Carroll's last marriage.

Nash Pate & Bethenia Stubblefield children:
Alvin (Guy) Edward Pate (1883) Lamar, TX d: 1957
Charles Edwin Pate (1887) Franklin, TX d: 1964
Dalbert W. Pate (1889) TX
Ola A Pate (1892) Clarendon, Donley Co.,TX d: 1962
Gus Carlton Pate (1899) Tell,Childress Co., TX d: 1918
Oscar Willie Pate ( 1904) TX

John S. Stubblefield's son: Thomas E. Stubblefield b: 25 Mar
1870 Hopkins Co., TX m: Martha Ann Vickers b: c.1870 b: TX father TX mother VA (who are her parents?)
I still need to track back to 1860 census TX.
Thomas E. Stubblefield & Martha (Mattie)Ann Vickers children:
Forest Stubblefield 1891 Hopkins Co., TX
John C. Stubblefield 1897 "
Steven Stubblefield 1905 TX
Perhaps more? see 1910 census TX it says she had ten children , nine survived:
It was hard to read so names may be wrong:
Thomas E. Stubblefield is not listed so "Mattie" is a widow.
Forest would be 19 years and is not listed 1910.
Others listed in 1910 census:
Riley F M/W 18 single b: TX father TX mother TX
Carrie ? F/W 17 single b:TX father TX mother TX
Nina R F/W 16 single b: TX father TX mother TX
Clara B F/W 14 single b: TX father TX mother TX
John C M/W 13 single b: TX father TX mother TX
Dora M F/W 11 single b: TX father TX mother TX
Lee R M/W 10 single b: TX father TX mother TX
Lola T F/M 7 single b: TX father TX mother TX
Stephan E M/W 5 single b:TX father TX mother TX

This is all a "work-in-progress" so any corrections or omissions are welcome.

One question is:
who are the parents of Nancy Clorence/Clorance Stubblefield. Is the name "Clorence" a middle name, instead of a maiden name?

There are many researchers who are considering the idea that many ancestors changed their names for many reasons. That could apply to both Nancy and Unknown Stubblefield. Are these Cherokee that avoided the government dispersal by hiding behind being "White"?

I really welcome ideas and corrections and suggestions !!!
I have lots of questions........
This is too much fun
