My Irish FURLONG family was also in Mayslick during the census for Aug
1870. The Post Office is listed as "Mayslick Ky" for my family.
I'm guessing that maybe "Freetown" was a black community or neighborhood
within the Mayslick area.(?)
I checked my copy of "Kentucky Place Names" by Robert Rennick. There is
no Freetown named for Mason county, but there is one in Monroe county.
This is the short description for Mays Lick in Mason county:
This village with po lies at the jct of old US 62 and KY 324, 9 mi ssw
of Maysville. The vicinity was first settled in 1788 by 5 related
families from Plainfield or Scotch Plains, New Jersey, who purchases
1400 acres from William May 1752-ca 1825. They named it for him and a
nearby salt spring. The po was est on July 1, 1800, with James Morris,
pm.
