I have visited many of the Morgan County Lewis cemeteries where my ancestors
rest and have a few more I want to track down. The recent postings remind me
of my search for an Early cemetery that took me back into the woods a couple
hundred yards off a remote gravel road. It is listed in the cemetery
inventory, but is so out of the way, someone would really have to know where
they were to find it. A local man found it a few years ago out hunting and
luckily was sitting on his porch when I stopped for directions He led us out
to the cemetery, where there were several unmarked stones. A new stone read
Sammuel P (1857 - 1934) and Eliza B (1858 - 1936) Early. Another new stone
read Thomas M (1833 - 1901) and Jane P (1835 - 1904) Early. Jerry Easterling
(our "tour guide") said that the new stones appeared a couple years ago,
soon after he led a couple folks out there - not sure where the original
stones went! Sammuel's name had two "m"s in it. The "B" in Eliza is
Brashear(s). The "P" in Jane and Sammuel is Powell. One other stone was
legible - "Wm T Early 22 Recruit Co. U.S. Inf." (William was Sammuel and
Eliza's son and died in the Spanish American War in 1912) Jerry also led us
to the old Early homestead nearby - pretty much caved in now. Scraps of
newspaper attached to the walls to cover cracks were dated 1936 - one paper
appeared to be from Cincinnati. The meadow around the homestead was filled
with daffodils and blackberry bushes. This was all off of Ditney Ridge Road
across from where the old Ditney School House used to stand (and where Jerry
Easterling's home now stands). Sam and Eliza were my grandfather's
grandparents and I believe that he was born in the house mentioned above.
