Dear Kathryn,
Thank you so much for the information on the Griffings. I'm posting to the list from work so of course all my research material is at home, but hopefully my memory will suffice for now.
If I recall correctly, it was Barton where I first ran across Sarah Curtis Griffing listed as the wife of John Taylor, and it may be Barton that listed Elijah Taylor as their son. Given the fact that Elijah Taylor was born on May 12, 1812, combined with the information you've provided, it's clear now that he can not be Sarah Curtis Griffing's son. So she must have been at least John Taylor's second wife, and I know that I need to try and track down either Frances Neel or Frances Vice.
It's fascinating to me just how many links there are between the Yelton and Taylor families. Your Maria Louisa Yelton is the sister of my ggg-grandmother Isabelle/Isabella Yelton, wife of Elijah Taylor, whose stepmother was Sarah Curtis Griffing, sister (I gather now) of Aaron Ross Griffing.
Have you, by any chance, come across a will (and or other probate material) for either William C. Yelton or Nancy Taylor Yelton Griffing? I have some of the probate material for William C's father Charles, but have not been able to track down anything for William or Nancy. Also, I know this is a real long-shot, but if you know of anyone who might have pictures of these Yeltons or Taylors I'd love to know about it.
Thanks again.

Dear Jeffrey Duvall
I also am interested in Nancy Taylor and William C. Yelton, as I come from
their daughter Maria Louisa Yelton who married Aaron Ross Griffing in Sept
1841. [Aaron was a grandson of John Steele.]
After William C. Yelton died, Nancy Taylor m.2 as his 3rd wife, William
Griffing, in March 1841. William Griffing's first wife was Mary Steele, the
daughter of John STEELE. William Griffing and Mary Steele had 8 children;
their youngest was Aaron Ross. Yes, Aaron and Maria were step-brother &
sister for a few months before they wed.
Anyway: William Griffing and Mary Steele's second daughter was Sarah Curtis
Griffing, and she was born May 17, 1808. According to the information I
have, she married John Taylor as his second wife in November 1832. According
to Elise Markham, her father William Griffing signed consent, and this
document is at the Alexandria courthouse. I don't know why her father would
have had to sign consent, because Sarah Curtis was of age in 1832.
Our family had copied the dates of the children of William Griffing and Mary
Steele from William Griffing's old bible & daybook in the late 1800s. Sarah
Curtis Griffing Taylor was known as Curtis, and she was alive at 1854
signing documents at the estate of her father William Griffing. That estate
is in the Barton Papers.
I don't know of any children from the union between John Taylor and Sarah
Curtis Griffing, but I don't think she was Elijah's mother.
Regards,
Kathryn
