Subject: [KansasCity-L] Kansas City Census 1885
Date: Wed, 13 May 1998 11:51:35 -0500

My grandfather, Alois Michek aka Louis Mailes ran away from his Father
and Uncle in Kansas City in 1885. Three weeks age I was looking through
the Kansas City Evening Star newspaper at the Mid-Continent Public
Library in Independence MO to see if I could find any kind of article
about a missing small boy.

I was not able to find any information on him but I did locate several
articles about a Kansas City Census that was taken in 1885. The library
staff had not heard about this census. They called several agencies and
no one knew about the Census.

I found the following articles.

Sept 15, 1885, page 2, col 6: City Ordance Approved to Conduct a Census
of the City of Kansas.

"The first business before the council at last night's special meeting
was an ordiance providing for the taking of the census of the city, work
to be done by Mr. T.R. Tinsley, superintendent of buildings......."

Sept 21, 1885, page 2, col 6: Tinsleys Census.
Oct 7, 1885, page 1, col 1: The Census Taken
Oct 10, 1885, page 1, col 6: Counting Noses Twice
Oct 13, 1885, page 2, col 5: Still Counting
Oct 21, 1885, page 2, col 3: Redistricting The City.
Oct 26, 1885, page 2, col 3: Census Incidents
Oct 29, 1885, page 2, col 4: City Population: "The Census will Show a
Population of Over 100,000.

Nov 2, 1885, page 2, col 6: AS TO THE NEW CENSUS.
Nov 2, 1885, page 2, col 4: The Population Counted
Nov3, 1885, page 2 col 3: "The Census Report Submitted to the Council"

"The work of taking the city census has been completed, names have been
counted and last night Superintendent Tinsley submitted his report to
the city council. The report contains a thorough statement of the
methods used in taking the census from the selecting of clerks to the
eliminating of duplicates, and also a copy of the form used in securing
not only the name of each ihabitant but his age, color and
vocation........"

HAS ANYONE EVER SEEN THIS CENSUS. Since the 1890 U.S. Census is not
available, this might be one of the best places for me to find the
parents of my grandfather.

Any help would be appreciated.
