"The Kansas City Times" (Missouri) Friday, January 2, 1914
John Charles EGNER, 90 years old, for forty-three years a
resident of Kansas City, died at 9 o'clock last night at his
home, 1012 Euclid Avenue. He received burns on the night
of December 18 when his clothing came in contact with a
lamp which was burning on a dresser. The shock weakened
him and hastened his death. He was the father of John C.
EGNER, chief of the Kansas City Fire Department. He would
not permit the use of gas in his sleeping room.
Born in Wurtemburg, Germany, August 29, 1823, he
immigrated to the United States in 1838, settling in Chicago.
In 1845 he joined the volunteer fire department in that city,
being a member of engine company No. 2. He was a life
member of the Firemen's Benevolent Association of Chicago.
In 1870, he came to Kansas City, and until 1884 conducted
a wholesale and retail meat business at Twelfth and Walnut
streets. Since that time he has lived a retired life.
He is survived by two sons and four daughters: John C.
EGNER, chief of the fire department, and William EGNER,
of Boston; Miss Anna and Miss Olga EGNER, with whom
he lived; Mrs. George VAIL of Kansas City, and Mrs. E. H.
MILHON of Portland, Ore.
The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock
from his late residence, 1012 Euclid Avenue. Burial will
be in Chicago.
