TWO ROBBERS USE A GUN
Because he did not hold up his hands promptly enough to
suit them, two unknown men, on robbery bent, fired three
shots at John HOULEHAN, a saloonkeeper at 1728 St. Louis
avenue, about 12:30 o'clock this morning. Two of the shots
took effect, but HOULEHAN, according to the verdict of the
police surgeon, is not seriously injured.
HOULEHAN was mopping the floor preparatory to closing the
saloon for the night when two men entered and issued the
time-honored edict, "Hold up your hands." HOULEHAN wasn't
sure that they meant it and he hesitated while he scanned their
faces to see whether they were in earnest or were simply trying
to make him the victim of a practical joke. This moment of
indecision was responsible for the ride which HOULEHAN
subsequently took to police headquarters in the ambulance.
The other fellows evidently thought he was preparing to execute
a flank movement on them and they opened fire. One bullet
entered HOULEHAN's left breast and lodged there. Another
shattered the third finger of his left hand and also penetrated the
hand. The third lodged in a post in the saloon.
After firing the shots the two strangers decided that it was unwise
to tarry in that vicinity longer, especially as they heard approaching
footsteps, and they fled. The police later arrested two men and
held them for investigation, on suspicion that they were the men
who did the shooting. They protested their innocence.
HOULEHAN was treated by the police surgeon, who said he
would recover.
