Hi all
My first posting, from the UK.
Searching the origins of my GGF Thomas Brown, born New Orleans USA, abt.1845
(From UK census 1881.)
Appears in London, England in abt. 1866 with the birth of first child to an
English "wife". They have 6 children in total, the last born 1879. Still in
UK in 1881 but gone by 1886, (children in orphanage, then army at 14 years
old.)
Recently acquired marriage cert for youngest daughter gives father's
occupation as "Sergeant in United States Army, deceased.) But no indication
WHEN he was in the army. Earlier birth certs had always listed him as an
artisan, working with glass or mirrors. Family hearsay, has him returning to
USA with his brothers/uncles, to fight. (What or who, I have no idea.)
My assumption, is that he was in the military as a young man, so came to the
UK as an American soldier mid 1860s.
So questions, where might I find what the military was doing in London in
1860s. What was going on in the US in the 1880s that might persuade an ex
soldier to return.
I know next to nothing of US history for that period, so would appreciate
any general info as well as specific info. Alternatively, as this message
board seems very quiet, what would be a more active group?
Thank you.
