Hello, John Merz. Interesting query about your ancestor emigrating to
Louisiana in 1839. I think my Opdenweyers came about that time. They were
from the Rhineland, however. But they may have been living in Alsace or
Lorraine, I just don't know. All I know is they came in about 1838 or 1839,
judging from what was said on Joachim Opdenweyer's Declaration of Intent,
which he filed in St. Louis. It's possible he went from New Orleans to St.
Louis, then back to New Orleans where he received his citizenship papers in
1846. I know he lived in New Orleans until 1858.

So where is Reust, Paitzdorf and Thuringia compared to the Rhineland?

Bertrand Macpherson.

Hello subscribers of the LA-French-German rootsweb list;

I don't have to introduce myself to you again, but you do know
that I am a regular contributor to this list. However, today I have
a special Christmas wish -

a friend of mine in Germany wrote to me asking for help in his search
for a group of 125 people from his area who left there on 14.Sep. 1839,
and arrived in New Orleans in Dec.1839. With this group was one by
the name of Johann Michael Schuessler, probably the brother of his
ancestor. He does not have the name of the ship, and neither their
final destination.

Of course the possibility exists that New Orleans was just a stopover,
and the party went up the Mississippi, in such case I would appreciate
if someone could elaborate on this.

In any event, thanks for reading thus far.
John Merz

Dezember 1839 in New Orleans an.

Besonders interessant ist da natuerlich auch der Emigrant Johann Michael
(Schüßler) Schuessler.
