St. Marin Parish County Courthouse, Saint Martinville, LA 70570
(318)394-2210, was created on 17 April 1811 out of Attakapas county. The
parish County Clerk's records compile of marriage, probate, court and land
records but with no beginning date.
Attakapas County was originally named 'Attakapas County Attakapas Parish'
which was created on 31 March 1807. This original county/parish was
discontinued and divided into St. Martin & St. Mary 17 April 1811, Lafayette
17 Feb 1823 & Vermillion 25 25 Mar 1844.
What you can do is write or email the following:
Diocese of Lafayette
1408 Carmel Avenue
Lafayette, LA 70501-5298
(318) 261-5639
Archivist's name: Regina Arnaud
Area included in Diocese: The civil parishes of Acadia, Evangeline, iberia,
Lafayette, St. Landry, St. Martin, St. Mary (west of the Atchafalaya River),
and Vermilion.
The Diocese of Lafayette was established in 1918. All sacramental records
through approximately 1910 have been included in the Rev. Donald J. Hebert's
'Southwest Louisiana Records,' an abstract in alphabetical form of the
entries found in southwestern Louisiana parish registers.
The books are available from (of course):
Hebert Publications P.O. Box 147 Rayne, LA 70578 (The abstract is also
included in many library genealogical sections...
I wish Virginia Humling's book "US Catholic Sources" ISBN 0-916489-60-4 gave
the ISBN for this Hebert Publications book, but it doesn't)
Certificates are issued by the parish of origin. The archives staff does
not conduct genealogical research but will direct individuals to the
appropriate parish...just as a note, each parish have individual who do this
research for a small fee which are determined by the parish.
