Thanks everyone for the info on George Purvis. I have found him on all available census and directories, etc.

Apparently, in 1850 New Orleans one would "apprentice" with another attorney to become a lawyer. I will further check on the 1840s reading list required by the Supreme Court of Louisiana and possible testing.
