Hello, List:
I was trying to get the Pineville Sanitarium straightened out and replied to
an e-mail about the Pines, thinking they were one and the same. I just
received this e-mail from Elaine in Shreveport, (see below) and also the
answer I received from Loy below Elaine's e-mail. Thanks everyone. Jackie
Your speaking in reference to the Pines Sanitoriam. Not Pineville. Pineville
is a physcology (sp) hospital in Pineville next to Alexandria in Rapides
Parish. I called the only Pines Treatment center on Greenwood road and they
are not the ones. So I would suggest writing to the Shreve Memorial Libaray
and asking them. Please list the response on this list.
Thanks Elaine
In Shreveport,
Jackie,
You are talking about two different places.
The Pines Sanitorium was in Shreveport, Louisiana located at the northwest
corner of Pines Road and Greenwood Road (US 80). For many years it was a
Tuberculosis treatment center. More recently it is a chemical dependency
treatment center simply known as "The Pines." Also this facility is nowhere
near US Highway 71.
The other facility is the Louisiana State Hospital in Pineville, Louisiana.
Pineville is about 120 miles south of Shreveport and immediately across the
Red River from Alexandria, Louisiana. The Hospital at Pineville is bordered,
and possibly bisected by U. S. Highway 71 and is slightly north of the town
of Pineville. It was and is a hospital for the long term care and treatment
of mental illness. This facility dates from the 1930s and could have had a
cemetery on the grounds.
We hardly ever travel US 71 to Alexandria any more but if memory serves me
correct, US 71 was widened to 4 lanes for some distance north of Pineville
and probably past the Hospital. However, it would have been a project when
they were sensitive about cemeteries and I doubt that they would have simply
built over it.
Someone with the Louisiana Department of Hospitals or the Louisiana
Department of Transportation and Development should have records.
Hope this helps.
