The following article concerning Sidney KERLEY and Thomas GIVENS was published in the Opelousas Courier on October 8, 1853, but it had first been published in the South-Western Shreveport.

DREADFUL TRAGEDY -- On Saturday evening last, the 3d inst., an altercation took place between Mr. Sidney KERLEY and Mr. Thomas GIVENS, at the residence of the former, about three miles from this place. It appears that Mr. KERLEY fired a shot gun, loaded with shot, at Mr. GIVENS, and inflicted a mortal wound--but before Mr. GIVEN expired, he fired a revolver several times at Mr. KERLEY, which took effect, and he also expired in two and a half hours afterwards. A coroner's inquest was held over both bodies on Sunday, and a verdict in accordance with the above facts rendered.
Thus inconsiderately, and through the effects of sudden passion, (for they had just conversed friendly) two citizens have been prematurely launched into eternity. -- South-Western Shreveport.

I searched census records to learn more about these gentlemen. I found nothing more on Mr. Thomas GIVENS.
The census records showed a Sidney KERLEY, age 49, married to Susan, in Caddo parish on the 1850 Census.

On the 1860 Census there was a widow, Louise KERLEY, who had several children, the eldest of them, a son name Sidney KERLEY. I don't know her connection, but here is that data:
