Three sources all available at Shreve Memorial Library, Main Office, 424 Texas St., Shreveport, LA: (1) See Pages 484 and 485 in the book, "A History of the Baptists of Louisiana from Earliest Times to the Present," by Rev. W. E. Paxton, copyright 1888, Call No. 976.3 Pax; (2) an article in the Shreveport Journal, Shreveport, LA,newspaper, Bicentennial Edition 1776-1976: "Private Colleges Abounded in Area Prior to War, dated July 2, 1976,in Section H, page 13, column 4 by Bonnie Davis; in the Louisiana (LA) Collection, Call No. 071.63; and (3) a boook, " Short History of Louisiana Baptists," by C. Penrose St. Amant, copyright 1948, LA Coll'n Call No. 286.1 SAI. You may have to try library loan. Short version: In 1870 A Baptist group bought 70 acres of land in Shreveport suburbs; university opened in 1871, sold in 1878 under execution of a judment obtained by a creditor. "It was incorporated for literary, scientific, religious purposes with special attention given to m!
inisterial students." (from Source (2) above). Ten acres of it was later sold to create Star Cemetery still in existence in Shreveport, LA. The Shreveport Main Post Office also sits on a part of the once 70 acres.
