Marilyn and All,
Try this url:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~lagenweb/parish.htm
This is the parish index of the LaGenWeb Project. Each parish name
links to the regular parish genweb page where you might find things like
queries, addresses, links, look-ups, etc. The corresponding "folder"
icons in the far right hand column links to each parish's Archives
Project. The parishes that surround Claiborne are--Lincoln, Union,
Webster, Bienville....and Columbia & Union Co. AR. Also remember that
Claiborne Psh formed in 1828 from Nachitoches Psh.....so you need to
check Nachitoches Psh for records prior to 1828.
An article in Historic Claiborne '65 book says that there was a house
first owned/built by "Old Bill" Hammack and located directly on the
state line between Columbia Co. Ark and Claiborne Psh LA. In 1861,
Hammack sold the "State Line" house and land to J.M. Holland....who in
turn sold it to Rev. Samuel Beckett in 1863. The article goes on to say
that many LA folks went to Ark. to get married because 1) it was the
stylish thing to do and 2) it was conveniet because Ark. did not require
marriage licenses at that time. Sooo....folks would travel to this
"State Line House" and the "Marrying Parson" (aka Rev. Beckett) would
marry them in the "Arkansas Room." It says that he would then travel to
Columbia Co. Ark and file a minister's return for the marriages that he
performed.
Sooooo Folks--if you can't find a marriage in a north La parish that
borders Arkansas, you may want to check the bordering Arkansas counties
just to be sure!! I'm sure this wasn't the only "Marrying Parson" and
"State Line House" in all of North LA!!
Hope this helps everyone's searches!
Kel
