Another thing my father told me was that his branch of the Laceys (that is, John
senior and progeny; my roots were Edward, brother of the brigadier, who was a
Tory) came to America because they:

had first gone to the British isles with William the Conqueror, (Hugh and another
guy, don't have my notes) and were given part of Ireland to spread themselves.
But after many generations they loved Ireland too much, and quit collecting taxes
for the king at about the time of the War of the Roses. (Which I think settled into
Henry the 6th as king.) As a result they were recalled to England. After a
generation or two or three, they still didn't like living in England, and so came
here.

Therefore, this business of the two brothers with opposing views was significant.

I had written connection with a Laurie (Lawrence) Lacey, an herbologist, in far
eastern Canada whose family was "originally" Scots. He didn't tell me a lot about
his family, except that they all had the Norman characterisitics of high foreheads
and long backs. It is a genotype that the Normans still often have. (I do, too.) My
father's middle name was Lawrence, and my sister Laura.
