>SNOWDIE> Some years ago, Ray and I travelled from S.C. to Arkansas
via one of the state roads
>OLIS54> John had a son Augustus (my g-grandfather) who moved to
Luverne, Minn.
>OLIS54> Augustus had a son Levi who lived in Aitkin, Minn. Levi had a
son James Hugo Ladd who was my dad
>OLIS54> does anyone know what drew people to Ill in the 1850's?
>OLIS54> good and cheap land?
>.Bee> My dad told me his grandfather went west because of the gold
rush. But he was born in 1844
>OLIS54> no gold in Ill...
>.Bee> I have a theory. The wagon broke down.
>OLIS54> Civil War was 1860 no land grants till after the war
>.Janet> There were different gold rushes. Alaska 1898, Colorado
earlier than that.
>.Janet> LOL - they gave warrants for land from the Rev War too.
>OLIS54> one of Augustus's bro went to Cal for the gold rush
>.Janet> I posted the 1850 California census index once--Ladds only of
course. Is that on the LDG Misty?
>OLIS54> rev war was 1776 they moved there in 1855
>.Janet> Some moved out of Illinois too--maybe they left a spot for
yours Inez. :-)
>OLIS54> I saw a Ladd history in Weaverville, Ca can't remember his
name
>OLIS54> went for the rush and stayed
>OLIS54> have copy at my house
>.Janet> From the Red Book: "Migration from Illinois was also
significant and should not be overlooked by the genealogist. Kansas
and Nebraska were the eventual homes of many ILlinois settlers. The
gold rush to Califonria, the wagon trains of the Oregon Trail, and the
open prairies of Iowa all tempted the populace of Illinois to venture
further west."
>OLIS54> My people only stayed in Illinios for a few years must not
have stayed for anythng great
>OLIS54> went to Iowa like many others
>OLIS54> they stayed and prospered
>.Bee> My gr grandf picked up his bride in IA before going to MO
>OLIS54> beautiful place Iowa but don't like the weather
>OLIS54> my g-granddad got his second bride in Iowa also then went to
Minn for the timber
>.Janet> Christopher Ladd left Indiana for Iowa early, before 1850.
He's not mine either, but I learned a little about him in "The
Search!"
>OLIS54> my father and grandfather and g-grandfather were in timber
industry
>OLIS54> anyone seen the Weed name from Indianna my Augustus' bride
was Mary Ruth Weed
>.Janet> Not me
>LUDDSHAR> Not me
>** BOBBYSFMTR just joined "Ladd Genealogy" (7 members now) **
>LUDDSHAR> Hello
>OLIS54> I guess there were no weeds in Indiana..har har har
>.Janet> Hello Bobby, are you researching the Ladd family?
>.Bee> Hello
>OLIS54> Hello
>BOBBYSFMTR> Yes and I've never done this before
>BOBBYSFMTR> The line I'm researching is Elisha Ladd
>OLIS54> Neither have I
>.Bee> Neither have I
>LUDDSHAR> Which Elisha?
>OLIS54> is Elisha a northern Ladd?
>.Janet> Join the crowd Bobby, we're happy to have you!
>.Bee> There are a lot of Elisha Ladd's
>LUDDSHAR> Who did he marry, etc.
>OLIS54> What's his wife's name?
>BOBBYSFMTR> Mine is from Trigg Co. KY
>.Janet> LOL - See the interest in Elisha!!!
>OLIS54> great minds think alike Luddshar
>BOBBYSFMTR> He married Oneida Goode Cox
>.Janet> Bobby, that's another familiar name to some.
>SNOWDIE> This Elisha was the executor of Benj. Ladd, Sr's will.
>BOBBYSFMTR> That's the one
>OLIS54> Have I seen this Oneida Goode Cox name on the genforum?
>BOBBYSFMTR> Probably
>.Janet> Oneida Goode Cox--I've seen it somewhere too. On the mailing
list?
>BOBBYSFMTR> Yes
>SNOWDIE> Some think that Elisha was a son of Benj. But I think that
he was a brother.
>LUDDSHAR> I have an Oneida Goode married to Elisha Ladd. She was b.
1815 in Caldwell Co., KY and d. 3 30 1853 in Trigg Co., KY
>BOBBYSFMTR> I've never been able to prove who his father is
>LUDDSHAR> She had another husband by the name of Charlie B. Cox
>OLIS54> no death cert. for Elisha?
>LUDDSHAR> I have children listed.
>SNOWDIE> The reason is based on a note written on the side of one of
Benj legal documents. It said "delivered to his brother" or something
like that. I have a copy of it here
>BOBBYSFMTR> I just found a record of his death on a microfilm that
said he died in 1854 from lung congestion
>BOBBYSFMTR> I have Benj will too
>SNOWDIE> Elisha was married three times.
>OLIS54> no listing of his father?
>BOBBYSFMTR> No
>OLIS54> no cemetery records or do you know where buried?
>BOBBYSFMTR> No
>BOBBYSFMTR> I have his children by Onieda and that's all
>BOBBYSFMTR> Do you know if he had children by his first wife?
>OLIS54> any obits for any of the kids might list the lineage
>SNOWDIE> Elisha was the name of one of Francis Ladd's sons also.
Francis and wife, Tabitha Cato moved to Wayne Co. MO about 1829. I
think that Francis was a brother of Benj. sr and Elisha.
>BOBBYSFMTR> Does anyone know where Benj was born
>OLIS54> nope
>BOBBYSFMTR> Was he born in VA?
>SNOWDIE> He was listed in Lancaster Co. S.C on the 1790 census. He
fought in the Rev. War and was given a pension in 1792. This stuff I
found in Columbia S.C. archives.
>LUDDSHAR> I have his father listed as Benjamin Ladd who was b. abt.
1735 in Va. d. Jan 1827 in Carroll Co., Tennessee.
>OLIS54> anyone want info out of book by Ruth Ladd Kline let me know I
have a copy and it has many Virginia Ladd's
>LUDDSHAR> Benjamin was married to Sarah F. ?
>.Janet> Donald is giving up! He said to say Hello and Goodbye.
( Bonnie has a Cato site that includes Ladd information.
>OLIS54> I have not checked it for your Benj. and Elisha
>LUDDSHAR> Had two children by Elizabeth Johnson, none by Sally Wallis
and some by the other wife.
>OLIS54> will check the edit version of this chat and use it to check
the index for you
>BOBBYSFMTR> Benj did die in Carroll TN.
>.Bee> Bye, see you folks later, it's close to bedtime in SC
>.Janet> Glad you were here Berniece! B4N=Bye for Now.
>SNOWDIE> I would be interested in the Cato web page. Have an
address?
>.Bee> - signed off -
>.Janet> Laverne, I can't find it, I was looking...I'll add it to the
chat log.
[Here's that URL http://www.webkeeper.com/cato/c.html ]
>OLIS54> If i find info about Benj. and Elisha i will get in touch
next chat
>BOBBYSFMTR> Thanks I didn't mean to change the subject
>.Janet> Or post it to the mailing list Inez. Then we don't have to
wait two weeks! :-)
>SNOWDIE> Thanks. There is a Cato list similar to the Ladd mailing
list that I belong to. I feel that our Ransom is related to the Catos
because his name is a Cato name.
>.Janet> I'll be sure to include it Laverne. NO problem Bobby...we
tend to talk over and around each other during a chat.
>BOBBYSFMTR> It's all new to me
>.Janet> This is the ONLY chat I do--I learned here.
>BOBBYSFMTR> Did I stop the conversation about migration trails?
>.Janet> It's good for the brain cells too. Trying to keep several
conversations straight.
>SNOWDIE> Me too.
>BOBBYSFMTR> What brain cells;-)
>SNOWDIE> I don't think we ever got into the migration trails!
>.Janet> We try to have a topic, but we'll talk anything concerning
Ladds.
>OLIS54> There is a Mary and a Joanna Ransom in the Warren Ladd book
any relation?
>.Janet> Well, we decided they all moved from here to there. :-)
>BOBBYSFMTR> that sounds good to me
>BOBBYSFMTR> which one came to Va from Pa
>SNOWDIE> However, there was one major trail from New England to the
Carolinas and Ga. It was called the King's Highway--this was in
colonial times.
>.Janet> And there was the National Road, 1840-1850.
>OLIS54> ok i will ask what is the National road
>SNOWDIE> Then there was the Wilderness Trail that went up through Ky.
as well as the route across TN mentioned earlier.
>BOBBYSFMTR> I'm glad someone did
>.Janet> Looks like it went from Maryland to Terre Haute, Indiana
>.Janet> Canals and rivers pictured in also...
>SNOWDIE> After the Erie Canal was constructed, lots of people moved
west via the water ways and flat boats.
>BOBBYSFMTR> are you looking at a map
>.Janet> I have an "Atlas of American History" by Rand McNally--very
handy.
>.Janet> It's always a good idea to check the history and geography of
the places your ancestors were--it can give you clues to their origin
and travels onward.
>SNOWDIE> I think that the Ky Ladds who went to MO went north on the
Mississippi and entered Mo throught Cape Girardeau. That was the main
entry point to Mo in the 1820s.
>.Janet> Bobby, I remember very little, have to have it in front of
me!
>BOBBYSFMTR> I hated history in school now I love it because of
genealogy
>LUDDSHAR> Same here
>.Janet> Figure this out for me. I have an ancestor who was a FARMER
but between 1850 and 1860 he had a child every two years, in a
different state!
>LUDDSHAR> A traveling salesman?
>SNOWDIE> I've learned more about history through genealogy than I
ever learned in school.
>SNOWDIE> Some years ago, we tried to trace a route that the Carolina
Ladds may have taken to the west. We drove the width of TN along the
lower tier of the state. Every county there had their county seat
located on that two lane road.
>OLIS54> Well must get ready to sign off if you have any quieries
about Ladd's from the Northeast send them my way.... great sitting in
on this chat...too bad Donald missed it!!!
>BOBBYSFMTR> They did do a lot of traveling, not having a car
>OLIS54> goodbye
>.Janet> OK Inez, good to have you both.
>OLIS54> - signed off -
>.Janet> I agree about genealogy and geography, cartography,
demography, etc. You can learn a LOT!
>BOBBYSFMTR> I have trouble remembering it all and keeping it straight
as to who goes with what
>SNOWDIE> Think I'll say good night too. It's been fun chatting with
all of you, but it's almost 10 o'clock in Michigan. Time to get ready
for bed.
>.Janet> Great to have you Laverne!
>SNOWDIE> - signed off -
>.Janet> I'm afraid I may have to call it quits soon too. Meeting a
friend in a bit--sun is still up in California!
>BOBBYSFMTR> well I guess its about that time I've enjoyed it--catch
you next time
>.Janet> Great to have you too Bobby--and I can't remember anything!!!
It's all on paper.
>BOBBYSFMTR> I know what you mean
>.Janet> And the papers are a mess! :-)
>BOBBYSFMTR> by the way I have a Ladd cousin in CA
>.Janet> OH? Where?
>BOBBYSFMTR> She lives in Pismo Beach
>.Janet> Hmmm...probably not related to me. Too bad!
>BOBBYSFMTR> Well it's been fun
>.Janet> See you in two weeks Bobby!
>KYLADDS> The sun has been down long ago here but it is still HOT!!!
>BOBBYSFMTR> Ok by for now
>.Janet> The more the merrier!
>KYLADDS> Bye!!
>.Janet> Bye :-)
>BOBBYSFMTR> - signed off -
>KYLADDS> Just us 3 now. And I'm messing up so I guess I'll sign off
>KYLADDS> - signed off -
>.Janet> Sharon, I'm running between the computer, the stove, and
dinner! I need to go too.
>LUDDSHAR> Bye
>.Janet> Catch you next time!
>LUDDSHAR> - signed off -
>/EXIT >>>>Because Donald could not get into the chat, I suggested he
add our off-the-chat comments below...

LaddofOhio: What were the Virginia "counties" that were ceded to
create Kentucky in 1792 or was it just an area?
Jaynoodle: I think it was an area--consisting of what Kentucky is now.
Some of KY was claimed by NY too.
LaddofOhio: as Virginia went to the Mississippi and north through the
great Northwest Territories all of this was ceded at one time or
another to create Kentucky and the Ohio Territory
Jaynoodle: Yes
LaddofOhio: Was it NY or PA cause PA got several of the Virginia
counties and they were renamed
LaddofOhio: Those early LADD people in Kentucky may have been there in
Virginia and the next day they were in Kentucky 8^)
LaddofOhio: That is why the records are so sketchy
Jaynoodle: That's what I'm wondering. But that would put them away
from the coast where many were.
LaddofOhio: But Gerrard and his family moved to Ohio in 1808 and some
even before that
LaddofOhio: I don't have my books handy now, but the unmarried LADD,
Amos I think that left a will in Ohio leaving property to his brothers
children, namely Anna Marie and her brother? Anna Marie married
Charles MINGE
LaddofOhio: a lot of our line from Ellison went into Michigan IN, ILL
and maybe beyond
LaddofOhio: As Mary, METHAZ, is a distant cousin and lives in
Washington State as does Barbara JENSON, Sharon another cuzz, lives in
SD so it is probable that a lot went on west during the Great
Depression
