Hi,
Missed this message while I was out of town. Will check on the "missing
Dora" when I get down home.
As to the Ladd Creek, Ladd Road, etc. The Ladd Road connects with Gallahar
Road (US Hwy 58) and goes in a south eastward direction and end in a large
loop on Chestnut Ridge. Gallarhar Road was a toll built turnpike which
connected many smaller roads and is now a main road to Oak Ridge from
Interstate 40. As to Ladd Ridge Road ???? Unless is picked up the "ridge'
from Chestnut Ridge or is the smaller upper loop on big loop of Ladd Road. I
haven't been on that particular section of the road in several years. I
check it out. Ladd Road eventually connects with Poplar Springs Road north
of US Hwy 70 east of Kingston near the section where "the Broadway of
America" meets Kingston Pike coming out of Knoxville.
Near Interstate 40 interchange number 356 about four miles east of Kingston,
TN at the Gallahar Road exit, the Ladd Road can be found south east side of
Gallahar Road. Near this entrance on the north side is the Johnston Valley
Road. The family of John C. and Martha Mountcastle Ladds were early setters
of that area. Four of their children married Johnstons. William Joseph Ladd
married Margaret Martha Kisiah Johnston; DeLafayette Ladd married Sophia E.
Johnston born in 1826; Robert Mountcastle Ladd married Sophia Johnston born
in 1844; and Mary Ann "Maggie" Ladd married Isaac Johnston. Many descendants
of the Johnstons and Ladds remain in the area.
I am a descendant of Mary Ann "Maggie" Ladd and Isaac Johnston. There of
their children married descendants of the Rev. John H. Wilson and his wife,
Lucinda Bogart/Bogeart/Bogert (or with a "d" instead of a "t" on the end)
from that general area. One of these descendants lives about 2000 feet from
the entrance to Ladd Road.
Their is a small Ladd Cemetery on Gallahar Road on the right about 1000 feet
from the entrance to Ladd Road on Gallahar Road toward Interstate 40.
Many of the Ladds and their relatives are buried in New Greenwood Cemetery
on Lawnville Road. Lawnville Road can be located off Interstate 40's
interchange number 355 for Lawnville Road about three miles east of
Kingston. The cemetery is about a mile north east of the exchange.
Sometimes the New Greenwood Cemetery is called Lawnville Cemetery because of
its location in the Lawnville Community. Or the Young's Chapel Cemetery
because it is located next to the church. Their are Ladd's at Bethel
Cemetery in Kingston. Both of those cemeteries have many Ladd graves and
their relations. My grandparents are buried at New Greenwood and my
great-grandparents are buried at Bethel along with many of their cousins.
Ladd Creek runs through the property in this general area.
It is a beautiful part of the country and easy to view because of the
Interstate.

Leota

Subject: [LADD-L] A missing Dora LADD
Y'ALL -
I have ODed on LADD today. In a convenience store in Kingston, TN - Making
small talk, I asked the clerk if she knew of any LADDs. To my amazement,
she said, "My grandmother was a LADD." "COUSIN!" says I. She said her
granny was Dora LADD and that she married a REED (maybe REID?) but she did
not know Dora's parents. I asked her if she was a 2nd or 3rd cousin to
Howard Baker - she knew of no relationship. Howard's mother and greataunt
are the only Dora's that I could remember. It looks like there must have
been another. The clerk, Rose, was underwhelmed by my LADD knowledge.
Then, while trying to get back to the expressway, I espied "LADD Ridge
Road". I turned around and drove the road up LADD ridge - I crossed LADD
Creek - found a native - no LADDs. After returning to Chattanooga, I had to
go to Monteagle - traffic jam at the river - detoured through LADDs
Community - passed Ladds Switch Road. Then stopped at the Martin Springs
exit for fuel and thought - "What the hay - LADDs Cove Road and LADDs Cove
just on the other side of the overpass, so I drove over to LADDs Cove before
continuing to Monteagle. Are there any Guinness records on LADD landmarks?
Life goes on -
Jim Christian
