I attended Dufrocq Elementary School at 330 Dufrocq St., now 19th St. I
finished the third grade there in the spring of 1941. Then we started
traveling because my dad was helping to build the war plants and military
bases. We returned in the late summer of 1942, and I attended Highland
Elementary School way out Highland Rd. I do not remember if it was the
same address as today at 280 Sunset Blvd. I graduated from there, and
then attended Baton Rouge Jr. High on Florida St. , and graduated from
there. Today it is used for public offices located just east of the
expressway. Then we moved some more, and returned home in the summer of
1944. I then attended Baton Rouge High School until I graduated in 1948.

I attended Standard Heights School during WWII. We were preoccupied with
the war and had scrap metal collections, air raid drills, practice walks
home, war bond sales, etc.
The building was a one story brick for grades 1 through 6 ( no
kindergarten when I attended) with one classroom for each grade. The
playground was large and grassy - and next door to a large parking lot
for the Standard Oil Refinery - now Exxon. Several years ago I found the
old school and took a photo. It was abandoned, falling apart, and quite
sad. I think I may have another photo of the front of the school from
the 1940's. I am not at home, however, and don't have my photos with me.
The recent photo I took would not be a happy reminder of the years when
your relatives attended the school.
