I have been studying the archives and found in Virginia Genealogies #2 1600-1800 Genealogies of Virginia Families, Volume V, The Upshaw Family of Essex, Page 265 the following exerpt: ...".He married Mary Lafon, born in Essex, 1744, died 1807. She was a daughter of Nicholas Lafon, said to have been of Huguenot descent, who died in Essex before March 20, 1749. They were married at some time between October 16, 1750, when John Rennolds was appointed guardian to Hannah, Richard, Mary and Elizabeth Lafon, orphans of Nicholas Lafon, and August 21, 1769, when John Upshaw, with the consent of his wife, Mary, sold his share of Nicholas Lafon's estate to John Rennolds, who had intermarried with Elizabeth, widow and relict of Nicholas Lafon." This is the first written word I have found of a connection with the Hugeunot migration. I have found reference to a William, Fred, Francis, & Major(spelled Lafon in one reference and Lafoon in another), also John. I have found a reference !
to William Lafon who served in the War of 1812 who was from KY. It seems there is a definite beginning of this one branch that came in through Virginia. I wish I had access to their State Archives in the State Library. I have also found a LaFon who came in through New Orleans and later found the same in a couple of other parish polls in LA. LaFons also served with the LA French Company in the War of the Northern Agression....To date I have not found any in the Revolutionary War. But, if the above is true re Virginia, they may have. My William was born in NC ca 1787. I have been hoping to connect him with the William in VA. My William LaFon named his first son, Fedric. I found a William and "Fred" LaFon listed in the King and Queen County Records concerning 18th century persons on a list of altarations of land in the county for the year 1786. I wondered if my William could have been a son???? The first census poll I find my William is in TN and the birthplace is li!
sted as TN likewise his wife, Julia Ann and most of their children. The general migration for VA to the south seems to be NC, KY, TN, GA etc.I have found this the same in the other lines I am working. William I can trace from TN straight through to TX. All census say place of birth, NC. However I have found to be wrong on one of my lines said was born in TX when in fact was born in AR.
