Subject: Early LaGrange's (continued) by Vreeland Y Leonard
Date: Tue, 8 Jun 1999 08:38:52 EDT
Dear Listholders,
Continuing with transcription of Vreeland Leonard's compilation of LA
GRANGE FAMILY (Dutch Settlers Society of Albany Yearbook 1948-49)
"In "Early Germans of New Jersey," it is stated that "John La Grange,
born May 6, 1656 in New York, died at Bergen, N.J., May 6, 1742, married Anna
Vail, died June 6, 1734, buried in Lutheran Church Yard, New York. Left two
sons, John and Christian and several daughterrs." The data her given is only
partially correct. The "Anna Vail" is not mentioned in any of the early
records and is only named in connection with copies of this incorrect data.
This John La Grange (2) was in reality the eldest son of Omie de la
Grange (1) and the record of his marriage in the N.Y. Reformed Church as
follows: Bans Sept. 18, married Sept 18, 1697, Johanes La Grange, young man
from Albany and Ytie Croesvelt, young woman from this place (.N.Y.). During
his life he lived in New York, Esopus, also along the Normanskill in Albany
County and in Bergen, J. J. with his son John (7) where he died May 6, 1748,
his grave stone reading "in his 84th year" so that he must have been born
about 1665. He left a will dated June 8, 1747 but not proved until May 9,
1773 (Albany Co. Wills, Book 2, paghe 1.) in which he mentions his eldest
son Johannnes (7), his youngest son Christian (8), three daughters, Annatje
(2-A), Margaret (2-B) and Chrystina (2-C), his deceased wife Eytie, three
grand daughters, Eytie, daughter of son Christian (8), Eytie, daughter of
daughter Annatie (2-A) and Eytie, daughter of daughter Christintie (2-C),
also Mrs. Elsie Egberts (4) wife of Barent Egberts. He gives his five
children his late dwelling house in New York and to his son Christian (8) his
house on the Normanskill.
The births of Isaac (5), Christina and Jacobus (6) are all recorded
in the Albany Reformed Church so that there is no doubt about their
parentage. Isaac (5) leaves a will in which his children are mentioned and
Jacobus (6) also leaves a will in which his children are mentions, also his
father Omye (1), deceased.
As further proff that Johannes La Grange, often given as the son of
Johannes de la Grange, the Huguenot emigrant, was in reality the son of Omie
de la Grange (1), is given in the settlement of the suit over the Van Baal
Patent (N. Y. Secretary of State's Office, Book 38, page 439) where the heirs
of Johannes Symonse Veeder and Omie La Grange (1), the original purchasers of
the Patent each received 48 parts of the whole 96 parts. Omies 48 parts were
divided among the heirs of his three sons, Johannes (2), Isaac (5) and
Jacobus (6), each receiving 16 parts. The two sons of Johannes (2), Johannes
(7) and Christian (8) each received 8 parts. The three sons of Isaac (5),
Omie (10, Isaac (11) and Coenradt (12) each received 5 1/3 parts, and the
five sons of Jacobnus (6), Barnardus (13), Omie (14), Johannes 15), Arie (16)
and James (Jacobus) or Myndert (17) each received 3 1/3 parts. Omie (4), son
of Omie (1) was dead without issue and so was not included in the division.
Why Jellis (3) the son of Omie (1) was not included in this division is not
known except that Jellis (3) died Jan 1710, and his son Christian (9) died
beform 1757 (will of Antje Molenier of Somerset Co., N. J. dated Dec. 22,
1757, mentions her niece Catyntie La Grange, widow of her late nephew
Christian La Grange (9), Arch,. N.. J.). However Christian (9) had two sons,
Jellis (22) and Arie (23). Jellis (22) died before 1796 as is shown by an
entry in the Church of Helderbergs (Albany Co.) where on Oct. 29, 1796,
Annatje Legransie, widow of Jellis Legransie, was received into the Church.
Arie (Aaron (23) who lived in new Jersey, moved to Pennsylvania about 1770
and later, about 1780, to Mercer Co., Ky.
Among the parties of this settlement was John La Grange (7) of Bergen
Co., N.J. His son John (18) went to Vestal, N. Y. and there married
Elizabeth Mersereau. The following sketch of John La Grange is from "Annals
of Binghamton and the County connected with it" by J. B. Wilkinson, 1840,
repring 1872 (Congressional Library, Washington, D.D.)
"JOHN LA GRANGE, Esq of Vesta, came to this country shortly after
1789. He moved from Elizabethtown, N. J. when quite a young man, with a
young wife who was also of Elizabethtown, and of the Halsey Family of that
place. She was a woman of more than ordinary energy, at the same time
amiable and dignified in manner, and extensively useful in her neighborhood
This much is thought to be no more than just tribut to her virtue. Upon
coming here, he purchased his land of his uncle, Judge Mersereau, opposite to
whom he settled. When he came, he was unacquainted with a wooded country,
and even with farming itself, so that he partial success for a length of time
and his frequent irritation from want of more experience, as well as the
unpropitious aspect of a newly settled country, induced him many times to
wich that he stayed where the elements around him were less at variance with
his knowledge and habits. His wife, however would beear up his courage or
pleasantly ridicule his vexations. Esquire La Grange is of the fourth
generation in descent from Mr. John La Grange who was from France (*) and was
Patentee of a large tract of land twelve miles square, embracing it is said,
a part of the site on which Albany now stands.
*The above statement is incorrect as Esq. La Grange was the son of Johannes
(7) and the great grandson of Omie La Grange (1) who purchased the Van Baal
Patent with Johannes Simonse Veeder. The law suite over this Patent was
settled Feb 8, 1789. Secy of State's Office, Book 38, page 439, Albany, N.Y.
