Trooper Pollard Is Killed While Directing Traffic

State Police Trooper J. N. Pollard, 37, of Bentley, was struck by an auto and killed while directing traffic on U. S. Highway 71, one mile north of Montgomery Tuesday night.

Trooper Pollard was well known in this area and had worked in close cooperation with Winn Sheriff Sanford Jordan.

Pollard who was with Troop E at Alexandria was resident trooper for Grant Parish.

The Trooper was hit while standing in the middle of the highway as a truck was being pulled from the ditch onto the highway.

According to reports, Pollard had stopped a motorist suspected of being drunk. A truck had driven upon the scene and stopped and bogged down in the mud on the shoulder of the highway, and Pollard was directing operations.

Driver of the car was identified as a man from New Orleans. His name was not available. The Trooper, badly mangled, lived only a short while after being struck, and was dead on arrival at the hospital.

Funeral services weill be held at Prospect Church near Bentley at 10 a.m. Thursday.

New Orleans Man Charged In Death of State Trooper

Wilson Corcoran, a Federal Public Health Service worker from new Orleans, is being held by State Police on a charge of negligent homicide in connection with the death of State Trooper Nelson Pollard.

Corcoran was the driver of the auto that struck and killed Pollard as he was direecting traffic on U. S. Highway 71 about a mile and one-half north of Montgomery on November 23.

Corcoran said he was driving about 55 miles per hour, when Pollard was hit,
Captain E. C. Lyles of Troop E, Alexandria, reported.
