The First ward of Jefferson Parish was McDonoghville. Old census records gave the Post Office as Carrollton. Folks had to go across the river to get their mail there. The Second Ward of Jefferson was Gretna. The third ward was up-river from Gretna to the Harvey Canal.
McDonoghville was John McDonogh's plantation. It ran from today's Opelousas avenue in Algiers, LA to today's Stumpf street in Gretna, LA. His home was lost to river erosion.
Portions of four streets along the river remain in Gretna but once ran all the way into Algiers. If you look at a map you will see they stop in Gretna but segments were lost to the river when several successive back levees were built between 1850 and 1900.
