Hi there,Joan,

I have just searched through my records because the RANKIN surname
struck a bell. One of my ggg-grandmother's sisters called Janet BAILLIE
b.17 Feb 1835 in Airdrie(New Monklands Parish-Lanarkshire) married
Archibald RANKIN and in the 1871 Census for AUCHINLECK(Lugar),Ayrshire,
I found them living at 412 Brick Row,Lugar.
It says that Archibald RANKIN was an Ironstone miner born in Muirkirk,
Ayr. He was 44. If your Rankins were involved in mining then there may
be a link as many miners at this time moved to find work in the numerous
new pits that had opened.
The couple's children were Elizabeth b.1858,Archibald b.1860,John
b.1863,Susan b.1865 and Jane b.1871.
I do not have any more information about them as this is a side of the
family tree that I have not as yet investigated further.
This may or may not connect with your family, but I thought I would share
the information just in case. One never knows!
