My great grandfather Charles McLellan came from the Glasgow area. He
died in about 1867. On his son's marriage certificate Charles's
occupation is listed as Civil Engineer.
Could someone please help me by answering the following:
Did the term Civil Engineer mean the same thing in the 1800's as it does
today?
Would he have graduated from a university to become a civil engineer?
If he did graduate from a university, which ones would be the most
likely?
There is the possiblity that he was in the military. Would this be in
line with being a civil engineer?
Any help would be appreciated.
