I realise both these topics are cooling rapidly but:
1. As regards Scots Origins and the death certs, I agree it's valuable to
have women indexed under both names (very valuable!) BUT feel someone doing
the copying shd be able to use their head and query an order where the name
on certificate (ie married name) is not the same as the name under which
the cert is ordered. Not everyone, as we've found, is aware of the possible
confusion and I feel it should be flagged at the ordering stage.
The moral is: (a) always check and (b) always state whether you are
ordering under married or maiden name. It might help and gives you a
comeback.
2. Back to the bowel hives discussion. I have just checked the Concise
Scots Dictionary, which wd not have been my first road for C19 medical
terms but there you are. And clear as day we have:
-bowel hives:..2: enteritis etc in children (16thC onwards)
and
-hives: 1: name for a skin eruption, esp red-gum in infants; now any
childish ailment without distinctive symptoms (16thC on). 2: inflammation
of the bowels in children causing fever and diarrhoea (20thC)
So you can take your choices.
Best,
Pat
