Hi Folks,
Just in case members don't realise, under Scots Law the Kirk Session is
still to this day a court of law within each Parish in respect of matters
Ecclesiastical though with almost no power. The Parish Minister must consult
his Kirk Session on matters spiritual as regards the parish and each Kirk
Session has two or more representatives plus the Minister on the Presbytery
Council. There is a Presbytery in virtually every county and comprises each
parish in the Presbytery. Each Presbytery sends representatives to the
General Assembly which meets each year for a week. It met just over a week
ago in its HQ on the Mound, Edinburgh which is why the Scottish Parliament
had to move out and go to Aberdeen. For the first time in years the Queen
actually attended in person. Normally she is represented by the Lord High
Commissioner who is usually either a member of the Royal family or a Peer.
The Free Church of Scotland operates a very similar system.
Regards,
Mark
