Ed, I'm not sure what kind of bibliographic reference you want, but I've
always been under the impression that the three Wards were very old
administrative divisions, going right back into the Middle Ages. If I
remember my geography correctly, they divided the county into areas of
similar topography and settlement type, but the original thinking was
probably driven by ease of local communications. I know the Upper Ward (in
particular) has its own atmosphere and flavour, being mainly in the high
ground round the source of the Clyde, bleak and wet in winter (when it
isn't snowing) and full of sheep.
Have you tried the Mitchell?
