Jim. for what it's worth I have a similar sort of entry for a marriage in
Cockpen, Midlothian in 1786 which reads:

" Married May 12th 1786 irregularly Robert Davidson and Marion Tait, they
appeared before the Session the 25th February 1787 and were again declared
married persons"

The 'Session' was the group of 'Elders' responsible for the running of the
Church and ~ in many cases ~ the upholding of proper morals and behaviour in
the Parish and Parisioners. I suspect your "Diet" was a similar sort of
