I bought a CD with the Lanarkshire 1861 census on it. It contains a
section on seamen, presumably moored there at the time of the census. It
can be bought from the Glasgow and West of Scotland Family History

Many thanks for having a look at the marine register for my Alexander
Gilchrist is this a register available to the public or is it something
that
you own yourself? I've already found another seaman ancestor who
drowned in
the Irish Channel which explained why I could never find a death for
him,
(got his death info. from thepoor relief when his widow applied) perhaps
Alexander met the same fate!
