Subject: 1851 Census Damage
Can anyone tell me which parts of the 1851 Lancs Census were destroyed
during the blitz.
I know some were damaged by water during fire control activities in the
war and some attempt is being made to resurrect them using infra-red
photography but am not sure which districts survived, or whether
restoration has had any success.
David
The following parts of the 1851 census for Manchester and district have not been
microfilmed or made available to the public for research purposes because of water
damage to the originals. This has left a dark brown stain across large areas of the
returns and has made them completely unsuitable for microfilming. I am not aware of
other 1851 census returns being similarly affected. They were damaged a long time ago
- much earlier than the 2nd WW - and up to 1990 were thought to have been completely
destroyed .
.
That's the bad news - the good news is that the M & L FHS were given permission by the
authorities in the Public Record Office to transcribe all the damaged returns and a
small team of volunteers have been working at the onerous task since 1991. We hope
to complete the work early next year. I estimate that over 70% of the original entries
will be recaptured. We are using UV light to scan the returns and the results are excellent,
considering the terrible state of the originals.
If you ned any further information about the returns, just let me know.
Best wishes

We intend to recheck the returns for those areas marked * using Ultra-Violet light. This has proved very successful on those returns which have been scanned with this equipment.
