Hi Joan,

I've just found out that my Manchester Cotton Mill Family (TURNER) first
settled in Providence, RI before moving to New Bedford and Salem Mass.
At the Rhode Island State Archives (see their web site), they keep idexes and
copies of STATE censuses done in 1865, 1875, 1885, which may help you. I went
there and found my cotton mill family in the 1865 census, which helped a
great deal: so far I can't find them anywhere in the 1860 US Federal census.
I also got their marriage and their first child's birth certificate. Anyway,
the people here were extremely patient and helpful, the best I've worked with
yet in an archives, and will take written requests for info. (free). Again,
see their web site.

On other bit of info: in my travels tracking down how my Turners came into the
US, I checked US National Archives films that listed immmigrants into the
ports of Providence, RI, (1820-49 on one roll and 1850-67 on another roll),
plus Fall River, New Bedford, and Boston, MA. Anyway, on the Providence Roll,
most of the ships came in from Pictou, Nova Scotia in the 1850s-1860s (where I
was looking).
In my case, I finally found that my ancestors came in from NYC. The exact date
and place was listed on the application for his US Naturalization Papers.

Good luck,
Cathryn
