I agree with the privacy issue. It is a sad world we live in. But family trees on
the internet is not the only place in which to find info on living people. Family
trees only make it easier for the thief to do their dirty work. As in my personal
case, my families particulars were already brought to the world's attention by
another researcher who was not even in our line. Just took it upon himself to "work"
all lines and then some and put them on the net. He did this 'gently" by contacting
folks on the net, and not on the net, asking about family lines, and unsuspecting
folks gladly gave out all info in hopes to help their own research. In most of the
libraries that surround where I live, my lines are in each library. I come from a
line of genealogists, who before all the privacy issues became a problem, never saw
the need to worry, and those who followed, simply followed up with supplements to the
books.
My opinion about credit cards wanting a mother's maiden name (for privacy issues), I
would refuse to give that, I would ask for another name or word to use. Too many
people, even those who do not have computers, can easily find out one's mother's
maiden name. But this is only my opinion and I am only one person.
